The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 2, Chapter 10)

“I was so sorry to hear about your losses in New Orleans,” I said, knowing they had lost their home plus a huge volume of Bob’s art work to Katrina .

“Yes, we’re still in Baton Rouge. We like it here but it’s only temporary. There’s nothing like N’awlins.”

    “Well, good luck to you.”

    “Sissee!”

    “Yes?”

    “Bette told me.”

“Okay. That’s good. Then you know what we’re up against.“

“You know I always liked you. I liked Tina too until she got her fucking autonomy. You be good to my Bette, ya’ hear?”

    “I hear.”

“I worry about her. She doesn’t need to be hurt anymore. And it’s about time you led the life you were meant to lead, too.”

    “I know.”

    “It won‘t be easy .”

“We have a few hurdles to jump.”

“I know all about it. When you two were young and sassy, in the beginning, I could see all the love you shared. It was blatant. You couldn’t hide it when you were both in the same room. You were a good match.”

“I hope we still are,” I smiled, glancing at Bette again, as she winked back. “Hey, Maxine, it’s been nice talking to you. I hope you and your hubby get back to the Crescent City so we can come visit you. Me, Bette and Boo.”

“Well, that’s a damn good reason for us to move back there,” she said, with a laugh. “I’ll start packin’ right now and…..” Her voice deepened with sincerity, “ I want you to know I’m here for you both if you need me.”

    “That’s good to know.”

    “Bye, baby.”

    “Bye, bye.

I handed the phone back to Bette whispering, “She’s remarkable!”

I put the blanket in the closet and got my cell phone. I went out the slider and stood at the railing on the back side of the porch. I called Howie first.  He asked a lot of questions about the things we had seen and places we visited.  After I filled him in  he got Charlie and Mary on the phone. The kids were full of themselves but it was fun listening to them. I tried returning Kyle’s call but there was no answer. I got a hold of my editor and brought her up to date. She was pleased to know my photographer and I had kept up the pace of the itinerary and been able to do so much in such a short time.

    1. I hope that Bette gets news from Angie soon. Thanks for posting. Always nice to get a new post from you. I check the site often just to see if your views number gets to 300 so that I don’t miss your post.

    2. Sissee, the backdoor & frontdoor comments were funny. I can see Sissee will always be Bette’s confidant, soulmate, and best friend. Whether they will end up together in the future would be a question (due to their own circumstances). It’s always nice to know that Bette has so much support from her mom (Maxine), sister (Kit), and Sissee. I really feel bad for Bette, without any news from others re: Angie. This is another good chapter to read. Other than Maui sceneries and natural settings, this chapter gave us more information of personal relationships (between B & her mom, B & K, and B & S, of course). Thanks for your posting of a new chapter.

    3. Azmama, You know, it seems everyone has a different idea of what love truly is. I can’t even begin to site examples but you all know what I mean. Bette and Sissee’s relationship epitomizes what love means to me and I don’t think everyone can relate. Some never feel that kind of intensity, depth and closeness of feelings but I think we all appreciate reading about it, or hearing about it, when it happens to others. It’s a rare and beautiful thing.

    4. Kbergin47, I love Maxine too. This particular Maxine. I have a certain someone in mind when I write about her so her persona falls easily into place. I hope you will find the next chapters less frustrating now that Bette and Sissee have “finally” been intimate. Smiling, as I thank you for your post.

    5. Brouhaha, I smile at that checking here often for that 300 mark. When hits go fast, as they do with a NC-17, I can’t keep up or sometimes my real life gets hectic and I’m not able to follow through. So it’s not a hard-fast rule of mine. But thanks for being interested enough to help things along.

    6. I love the detail in your chapters. They are always substantive and layered. Sisseee and Bette truly love one another. I guess one moral of the story is that it is never too late to discover your one true love…..even if it is years later in life.

    7. Bette’s Babe, Someone on my previous site, once said about the Bette and Sissee relationship that she did not see Bette as a “back door woman”. That was not exactly true because of the Candace affair but I liked that way of putting it. We all hold Bette in high esteem in spite of her human frailties that many of us share with her or easily forgive her for because, after all, she is a very special person. Thanks for your meaningful analysis. It helps me know what is important to my readers.
