The Adventures Of Bette Porter And Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 2, Chapter 10)

I embraced her tightly in response. We held each other very close and gradually settled down and relaxed. It started to rain again and the sound of it was almost a lullaby that seduced us into a deep and peaceful sleep.

A rooster crowed about 5 a.m., joined by morning birds until there was such a cacophony of crowing and chirping we gave sleep up. We had both turned our cell phones off before we got on the boat to Molokini and figured it was about time we checked our respective voice mails.

Bette had calls from Kit, Alice and her mom in New Orleans. Each member of my family called, as well as my editor. We put on robes and while Bette went out on the porch to call her mother, I took our wet clothes down to the garage dryer and folded up the blanket that was still in there. On the way I observed a very clean, clear day was dawning after all that rain. There were no clouds in the sky. It looked like we would have a great day to explore Maui’s most famous scenic highway – on the road to Hana.

When I went back up the stairs, Bette was sitting on a wicker chair laughing with her mom on the phone. When she saw me coming, I heard her say, “Here she comes now.”

I smiled. I adored Maxine. I was with Bette the night she told her mom she was gay. Maxine was so receptive, so blasé. She made it so easy for Bette, throwing in a few amusing tales of her own. I saw her off and on through the years. She was an incredible woman and would always be someone I was very fond of no matter if I was in or out of Bette‘s life.

“She wants to talk to you,” Bette said, handing me her cell.

    “Hi!” I said.

“Well, well, well…” said Maxine, in that sexy southern drawl she had. “How’s my darlin’ Sissee girl?”

“I haven‘t felt this good in a long time,“ I told her, looking deliberately at Bette. “How about you?”

“We’re surviving.” She was married to a very successful artist named Bob Brady.

    1. I hope that Bette gets news from Angie soon. Thanks for posting. Always nice to get a new post from you. I check the site often just to see if your views number gets to 300 so that I don’t miss your post.

    2. Sissee, the backdoor & frontdoor comments were funny. I can see Sissee will always be Bette’s confidant, soulmate, and best friend. Whether they will end up together in the future would be a question (due to their own circumstances). It’s always nice to know that Bette has so much support from her mom (Maxine), sister (Kit), and Sissee. I really feel bad for Bette, without any news from others re: Angie. This is another good chapter to read. Other than Maui sceneries and natural settings, this chapter gave us more information of personal relationships (between B & her mom, B & K, and B & S, of course). Thanks for your posting of a new chapter.

    3. Azmama, You know, it seems everyone has a different idea of what love truly is. I can’t even begin to site examples but you all know what I mean. Bette and Sissee’s relationship epitomizes what love means to me and I don’t think everyone can relate. Some never feel that kind of intensity, depth and closeness of feelings but I think we all appreciate reading about it, or hearing about it, when it happens to others. It’s a rare and beautiful thing.

    4. Kbergin47, I love Maxine too. This particular Maxine. I have a certain someone in mind when I write about her so her persona falls easily into place. I hope you will find the next chapters less frustrating now that Bette and Sissee have “finally” been intimate. Smiling, as I thank you for your post.

    5. Brouhaha, I smile at that checking here often for that 300 mark. When hits go fast, as they do with a NC-17, I can’t keep up or sometimes my real life gets hectic and I’m not able to follow through. So it’s not a hard-fast rule of mine. But thanks for being interested enough to help things along.

    6. I love the detail in your chapters. They are always substantive and layered. Sisseee and Bette truly love one another. I guess one moral of the story is that it is never too late to discover your one true love…..even if it is years later in life.

    7. Bette’s Babe, Someone on my previous site, once said about the Bette and Sissee relationship that she did not see Bette as a “back door woman”. That was not exactly true because of the Candace affair but I liked that way of putting it. We all hold Bette in high esteem in spite of her human frailties that many of us share with her or easily forgive her for because, after all, she is a very special person. Thanks for your meaningful analysis. It helps me know what is important to my readers.
