Not With My Daughter, You Don’t – Short Story
The fact that she had been staring with anger – without blinking even once – was reason for concern, but he still answered. “This cool club that I’ve been to that-”
“Not with my daughter, you don’t,” Bette interrupted almost immediately. “Try again.”
“Uh … okay. A movie then. Be back by … like one.”
“Ten.”
He laughed, but then straightened a bit when he saw that she was serious. She had the look of a fighter, strategizing her battle and moving swiftly with each word and pause. He had no time to be distracted by her physical beauty – he was truly intimidated by her.
“Mom, cut us some slack,” Angelica whined, coming down the hall with her purse over her shoulder. “Seriously.” She stopped beside her mother, and it was only then that Bette pulled her eyes from the boy. “Mom. Twelve is a perfect time, okay? It’s a Saturday!”
“Eleven.”
Angelica dropped her shoulders and adjusted her jacket with frustration. “Come on … at least eleven-thirty.”
Bette’s attention went back to Totus immediately when she noticed in her peripherals that he was looking at Angelica. That would not help his case. She nearly growled again, the anger boiling up inside of her.
“Okay okay eleven,” she agreed out of necessity, sneaking past her mother toward Totus who walked with her briskly down the path toward his car. Bette couldn’t help the protective nature that poured over her. She wanted to strangle him with her bare hands at times. Everything about him she hated. She hated that her little girl saw anything in him. She hated it all.
“Bette?”
Tina’s voice snapped her out of her unwavering madness, but she watched the car until it drove off and out of sight. Then she sighed. “I hate him.”
A smile touched Tina’s lips at the thought of what Bette’s reaction would have been had she pointed attention to the boy’s stare on her. Then she pursed her lips, trying to calm the beautiful brunette. “Bette? Come here, come away from the door. They’re gone.”
“That fucking bastard,” she muttered, pulling a little laugh from Tina as she felt two arms slip over her hips. She was slightly comforted by the familiar touch, but her anger was inevitable. And since they were alone without a doubt, the profanity found its way back into her vocabulary. “Why do we let her see him?”

Totus? The formal version of Toto? Great slice of life and totally how I picture Bette to be.
Hey GR, You had me rolling in the aisle. I just love when Angelica catches Bette and Tina out. Too funny. This was a great future tale. More please as this is the beginning of a great ocassionalseries, please. Many thanks for sharing this fun with me. Your Loyal Fan and Friend.
Loved it!! The part where Angie catches them making out is really fun^^ totally how I picture Bette to be too :D One observation though: did you really have to make 16 years old look so stupid?? Anyway, you should totally consider continuing this, it’s great!!
I’m going to practice my “death stare” for my daughter’s future date ) male or female) although that I already look intimidating. I loved that ending and I didn’t feel as if it were left opened. It was realistically happy, for me at least. I love how protective they are. Thanks GR :)
I enjoyed it tremendously, totaly how I see Bette reacting to her daughter dating and I love that Tina is there to calm her… Thanks for sharing
Bette’s reaction to that young man is not unusual. I’m afraid she would have that kind of reaction to any boy or young man that Angie wanted to date, even if he was 18 or 30, she wouldn’t care for him being with Angie and Tina will always be the peacemaker for these occasions. However, I know Tina really wanted to snap him one for looking at her breasts and if she’d told Bette, he’d be dead by now. lol Being the parent of a teen is no bed of roses. Thanks for posting.
Actually to me it does not seem unfinished, one could take it as a self-contained event that occurred, with thought of what may occur. It was very good by the way, not quite what I am used to reading and enjoying from you.
i was looking for a story with this theme. Do you know an other one with this subject?
‘it may seem slightly unfinished, but I wrote it that way because the realistic nature of such situations is that you often don’t always get the answers you want’ – I think its a great vignette from their future lives, g1 !
I´m so glad my daughter is only 5!
Wonderful. Liked it alot. THank you.
Difficult times for the parents and the kids.Thank you.PPS
thats exactually how i would picture bette to react to any guy angie dates… thx…
Oh memories! Raising teenagers. What a joy and a nightmare in one! This rings true GR. Thanks for the post.
Not unfinished at all. Polished and funny. Like the way your B&Ts balance each other.
Totus? what kind of a name is that? My generation was the hippy/yuppy generation and I never heard Totus before
