Not With My Daughter, You Don’t – Short Story
“Yes please,” Tina answered with a faint laugh, pulling herself over to Bette as they shifted into a position they had enjoyed often since they had first lived together. Bette leaned back with her head on the arm rest, and Tina’s head on her chest.
“Wonderfully smart book – quite hilarious. It’s something of a defense for the Wicked Witch of the West. Some day you’ll have to read it in its entirety – maybe once I’m done with it.”
“Sounds good,” Tina whispered, settling in close.
“She’s sassy, this Elphaba,” Bette smiled, reached out to bring the book into one hand and her reading glasses into the other. “It reminds me a bit of someone we both know.”
“You had better not be calling our baby a witch.”
Bette laughed for a moment as she pushed her glasses up on her nose before laying her hand gently over Tina’s head. “You know I would never say that. I’m just telling you that I’ve drawn some similarities in Elphaba’s most capable elements, and in her strong-willed nature.”
“You’ve got some vocabulary there.”
As she shifted under Tina only gently, she opened the book with a smile. “You ready?”
Tina closed her eyes as she relaxed into the comfort of Bette’s arms. “Yeah.”
After clearing her throat and moving her legs against Tina’s, Bette brought her eyes to the reasonable-sized print of the novel. She found her place and picked up where she had left off.
*“That you presume me to be right-thinking is touching,” said the Wizard. “You may drop the things where you stand. Unless you prefer to approach?” The lightning-marionette grinned and stretched out its arms. “My pet?”
Elphaba dropped her papers. “Good, my Lord,” she said in a piercing, pretentious voice, “I shall take you to be right-thinking, for did I not, I should be obliged to join an army against you.”
Tina smiled as she pressed her cheek to Bette’s chest, closing her eyes once more while she listened to the captivating turn of events. Somehow every piece of literature seemed more accessible when read to her in these quiet moments of the evening.
As she was entertained with Bette’s fluid delivery of the text, she allowed her overwhelming parental concern to escape her thoughts, and her mind to rest. It was a beautiful release they both could share.

Totus? The formal version of Toto? Great slice of life and totally how I picture Bette to be.
Hey GR, You had me rolling in the aisle. I just love when Angelica catches Bette and Tina out. Too funny. This was a great future tale. More please as this is the beginning of a great ocassionalseries, please. Many thanks for sharing this fun with me. Your Loyal Fan and Friend.
Loved it!! The part where Angie catches them making out is really fun^^ totally how I picture Bette to be too :D One observation though: did you really have to make 16 years old look so stupid?? Anyway, you should totally consider continuing this, it’s great!!
I’m going to practice my “death stare” for my daughter’s future date ) male or female) although that I already look intimidating. I loved that ending and I didn’t feel as if it were left opened. It was realistically happy, for me at least. I love how protective they are. Thanks GR :)
I enjoyed it tremendously, totaly how I see Bette reacting to her daughter dating and I love that Tina is there to calm her… Thanks for sharing
Bette’s reaction to that young man is not unusual. I’m afraid she would have that kind of reaction to any boy or young man that Angie wanted to date, even if he was 18 or 30, she wouldn’t care for him being with Angie and Tina will always be the peacemaker for these occasions. However, I know Tina really wanted to snap him one for looking at her breasts and if she’d told Bette, he’d be dead by now. lol Being the parent of a teen is no bed of roses. Thanks for posting.
Actually to me it does not seem unfinished, one could take it as a self-contained event that occurred, with thought of what may occur. It was very good by the way, not quite what I am used to reading and enjoying from you.
i was looking for a story with this theme. Do you know an other one with this subject?
‘it may seem slightly unfinished, but I wrote it that way because the realistic nature of such situations is that you often don’t always get the answers you want’ – I think its a great vignette from their future lives, g1 !
I´m so glad my daughter is only 5!
Wonderful. Liked it alot. THank you.
Difficult times for the parents and the kids.Thank you.PPS
thats exactually how i would picture bette to react to any guy angie dates… thx…
Oh memories! Raising teenagers. What a joy and a nightmare in one! This rings true GR. Thanks for the post.
Not unfinished at all. Polished and funny. Like the way your B&Ts balance each other.
Totus? what kind of a name is that? My generation was the hippy/yuppy generation and I never heard Totus before
