Not With My Daughter, You Don’t – Short Story
Bette didn’t answer.
“We’ve been over this, Bette.”
Finally relenting, Bette nodded and stepped into the kitchen for a moment. “I just need a moment. I’m still upset at her comment.” This would not be easy.
As the door opened, there stood Totus. He was nearly Tina’s height – shorter than Bette – and had the appearance of a punk rock enthusiast. Although they were all for looking past one’s appearance, his awful attitude was what truly affected their anger. He smiled as he rudely chewed his gum, nodding toward Tina with a sort of carelessness she did not appreciate. However, Tina tried to keep her smile. If Bette couldn’t be courteous and optimistic, then she would be. And it was only because he made Angelica so happy.
“Hi Totus,” Tina smiled, turning toward the kitchen to see that Bette was having some difficulty gathering herself. When she turned back to the boy, she lifted her brow at where his eyes had been. She only let it slide because she knew Bette would never allow him over to the house again if she knew. And in any case, Tina knew it had been an accident from the look on his face when she caught him staring. Laughter almost seemed appropriate, but she kept a straight face. “I’ll go and get Angelica.”
As Tina walked down the hall, he leaned on the door frame and chewed loudly before taking out his cell phone and texting one friend or another. He was interrupted as Bette loudly cleared her throat. “Totus.” It was something of a death stare.
He straightened up within the moment, continuing to chew his gum, but now with his mouth closed. Something about Bette’s composure always gave him a sense of impending doom – like she might just kill him one day. And regardless of his reputation, he was worried. Especially since a little talk Bette had with him when he first started seeing Angelica – a talk he would not soon forget. “H-hi Mrs Porter.”
She crossed her arms, unimpressed with even this slight progression in attitude. She couldn’t stand the thought of anyone dating her young, innocent daughter. “Where are the two of you going tonight?”
“Umm-”
“And back by what time?”

Totus? The formal version of Toto? Great slice of life and totally how I picture Bette to be.
Hey GR, You had me rolling in the aisle. I just love when Angelica catches Bette and Tina out. Too funny. This was a great future tale. More please as this is the beginning of a great ocassionalseries, please. Many thanks for sharing this fun with me. Your Loyal Fan and Friend.
Loved it!! The part where Angie catches them making out is really fun^^ totally how I picture Bette to be too :D One observation though: did you really have to make 16 years old look so stupid?? Anyway, you should totally consider continuing this, it’s great!!
I’m going to practice my “death stare” for my daughter’s future date ) male or female) although that I already look intimidating. I loved that ending and I didn’t feel as if it were left opened. It was realistically happy, for me at least. I love how protective they are. Thanks GR :)
I enjoyed it tremendously, totaly how I see Bette reacting to her daughter dating and I love that Tina is there to calm her… Thanks for sharing
Bette’s reaction to that young man is not unusual. I’m afraid she would have that kind of reaction to any boy or young man that Angie wanted to date, even if he was 18 or 30, she wouldn’t care for him being with Angie and Tina will always be the peacemaker for these occasions. However, I know Tina really wanted to snap him one for looking at her breasts and if she’d told Bette, he’d be dead by now. lol Being the parent of a teen is no bed of roses. Thanks for posting.
Actually to me it does not seem unfinished, one could take it as a self-contained event that occurred, with thought of what may occur. It was very good by the way, not quite what I am used to reading and enjoying from you.
i was looking for a story with this theme. Do you know an other one with this subject?
‘it may seem slightly unfinished, but I wrote it that way because the realistic nature of such situations is that you often don’t always get the answers you want’ – I think its a great vignette from their future lives, g1 !
I´m so glad my daughter is only 5!
Wonderful. Liked it alot. THank you.
Difficult times for the parents and the kids.Thank you.PPS
thats exactually how i would picture bette to react to any guy angie dates… thx…
Oh memories! Raising teenagers. What a joy and a nightmare in one! This rings true GR. Thanks for the post.
Not unfinished at all. Polished and funny. Like the way your B&Ts balance each other.
Totus? what kind of a name is that? My generation was the hippy/yuppy generation and I never heard Totus before
