Just The Girl – Chapter Forty Eight Part Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

“Right. Bette Porter.” Bette stressed on her surname. Swallowing hard, she bit her lower lip to stop it from quivering. “Daddy.. daddy might have disowned me, but I’m still a Porter. By name and by blood. I’m still his family – his only family. And I, I was supposed to be one of the first to know.” Her voice cracked as her body shook in anger. Though estranged and disinherited, she was still his daughter right?

“I’m.. I’m sorry if I didn’t tell you sooner like I was supposed to. I wanted to but..” A shamefaced James mumbled, fixing his gaze on the floor. No more excuses.. no more passing blame, he sighed, whatever he would say wouldn’t change the fact that he waited a whole day to tell Bette about Melvin.

“What’s going on?” Tina stepped out of the kitchen, wiping her hands with a towel. Her girlfriend was shouting at such an early hour. Never a good sign. “Babe?” She went to Bette’s side in an instant when she saw her ashen face.

Bette wiped the angry tears that were building up at the corner of her eyes and tore the bandanna from her head, releasing her brown curls. The party can be rescheduled to another date. This couldn’t wait another minute. Grabbing her keys and Tina’s hand, she trudged towards the front door with a chastened James following closely behind.

    “Porter? Where—?”

“I need to see my dad.”

Just like how Melvin needed to see her now.

It’s such a shame to let this go to waste

There’s a little time left here for saving face

We tried to put a bandage on these years

I know this isn’t what you want to hear

You can say what you like

Pass the blame I don’t mind because

We both lit the match that burned the bridge

We both lit the match that burned the bridge

We both lit the match and watched our bridges burn down

She was regretting this. Walking ahead of James and Bette to give them the privacy to make peace. Tina was regretting her decision. Because she was the one who saw this first. And she didn’t know what to feel. Dread? Sadness? Relief? No.. not relief, never relief. She wasn’t evil. She however, was frozen in place. And the first thing that she could think of doing was to call out for a certain someone..

    1. So glad that Melvin gave his blessing. Tina could win anyone over, though… Loving the story, and I can’t wait til you post again, Alchemy. T minus 11 or so days and counting… (Really, though, best of luck with your exam!) Thanks

    2. Just getting caught up on my reading & I read the last 2 updates. They were awesome, like always. I am still in love with your writing still-especially the humor. Great job!!!

    3. I knew that eventually that Melvin was going to see the similar traits between Maxine and Tina and of course himself and Bette. I am also glad that you let Melvin survive.

    4. Okay now the dad’s have to make up, that would be interesting. I can’t wait, but I will. Good luck on the test and study hard. We need to come up with some kind of drama, but no heart-attack-rendering-I-can’t-believe-she-would-do-that-shit, I wanna cry happiness not heart break. Love it, love it. Should you turn this story into a book, I would love to be the first on the waiting list to buy. Tah!

    5. The banters between B&T are tremendous. And truly enjoyed the poem too, you know. Alchemy, two weeks is too long for your next post.Promise you’ll post right after
