Bette begins to cry, “I know…I know….God, I’ve fucked everything up. I just don’t know what to do. I told her it meant nothing and I was sorry. Now, she won’t even take my calls. I’m so worried about her. I love her so much, Kit, and I’m utterly terrified of living without her.”

Kit softens, “I know, baby girl, I know you love her, and she loves you, too. But it takes time to get over something like this…if that’s even possible. I know it hurts, but whatever she needs right now, you have to respect it. If that means separating herself from you then you can’t go forcing her to talk to you.”

Bette: “But we’ve been together too long to just call it quits.”

Kit: “I understand that, but at the same token can you imagine what she’s feeling? What does it say to her that you’ve been together this long and you just bet everything on a whim. To her it probably seems that you’ve already folded.”

Bette: “What am I going to do, Kit?”

Kit: “Live your life. The world doesn’t stop for a broken heart. Do what you have to do to survive. If you really love her respect her wishes and give her some time. If, she decides she wants to work this out, she’ll come to you and when she does give her control, let her set the boundaries and make the rules…that’s the only way she’ll ever learn to trust you again. In the meantime, if she needs you…be there for her, make yourself available to her, show her you care by lending your support, but do it for her, let her take the steps….you just need to hold her hand and be there if she falls. I know you feel lost, but now it’s out of your hands. Just take care of yourself. And if it makes you feel any better, I’ll call around and see if I can make sure she’s ok, maybe that will make you feel a little better.”

Bette: “Thank you, Kit, I know I don’t always show my appreciation, but you really mean alot to me.”

Kit: “I know…listen, you need to get yourself together and go on into work. I’ll call you if I hear anything, ok?”
