Cornucopia ~ Chapter 8 ~ Thanksgiving Day (Part One of Two)

"I’ll catch up tonight and tomorrow."

    "You are studying too hard."

Bette laughed, "You feel safe saying that because you know I’ll ignore you."

"You need some time for fun."

"I have fun, Mrs. Brandshear," Bette protested as she laughed.

The older woman looked carefully at the younger for several seconds.  "You ARE.  Is it affecting your studies?"

    "Not a bit."

    "Good.  Care to share."

    "Not a bit."

    The two women laughed.

    "Thank you for the bagels."

"Thank you for letting us stay here last night."

Evelyn hesitated for a few a seconds, as if she couldn’t decide whether to abandon the subject.  "I was surprised that you wanted to take David to see the parade.  Such a long trip."

Bette knew where Evelyn was heading. Although she knew the older woman’s motivations were love and concern, Bette did not want to answer any questions.  Bette’s expression conveyed further discussion was not permitted, "I thought he should see it before he got too old and jaded."

Evelyn was not intimidated, "Are you going right back?

"The city has lots of sights to see."

    A long silence followed.

"Are you sure she will be, um," the older woman searched for a word, "healthy enough?"

Bette sighed, forced to discuss her secret plans, "I have been speaking to her.  She’s sounded fine.  I’ll call before we go over and if I have any doubts, we won’t go."

    "Your father will be furious."

"Daddy’s wrong.  At least David’s mother wants to see him."

Evelyn could see the hurt, sad, and angry little girl appear for a moment and she cursed Maxine.  "Have you defied him before?"

    "No."

    "Aren’t you worried?"

"No."  They both knew that was a lie.

Evelyn sighed. "Make sure to tell Kit that she should come for dinner today."

    @@@@@@@

"Up, up, up, my sleepy angel!" Drew announced.

"Is it time for the parade?"

"Yes it is and I have the perfect vantage point."

"I want to bring my notebook."

Drew knew that the notebook might get lost in the crowd.  "Whenever you are writing in your notebook, you will be looking down and won’t see what is passing.  Why don’t you watch everything and write it down later."

    1. What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.

    2. What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.

    3. wasn’t expecting an update on this one but surprise surprise, I new I didn’t wake up at 5am for nothing. Thanks for the update looking forward the next part!!

    4. I’m thrilled your embarrassment did not outweigh your will to post!!! I still rate this my favorite holiday story (no matter what holiday it spills over on, lol). The Russ, Shane, and Tina triangle is breaking my heart. Your Alice-antics are priceless! Jenny as a rainbow blur is spot on, lol, and Dana’s thought bubbles are just delightful! Bette’s mission to re-unite mother and son is deeply moving. Please keep going, I’m good for the ride until St. Patrick’s Day!!! “Erin Go Bragh!” (or is it “Erin go braless”???) SK/C

    5. ”I’m very embarrassed…” – Dear S, if anyone complains we’ll bop’m for you! – re:Spotlight on Authors, Got a link to the pg? (I’ve done maybe 3 posts on other parts of this site; I get lost easily, apparently) – “Point symmetry”: I’m sorry, but my relatives do not allow me to play with pointy objects. – See? Some of us do read author’s notes!… ;-D

    6. Hey Ice Cream, so glad your choosing to continue over your embarrassment. My word if I didn’t anything becaue of embarrassment I wouldn’t do much.
