Cornucopia ~ Chapter 8 ~ Thanksgiving Day (Part One of Two)

She did not know New York’s Port Authority Bus Terminal, East 7th Street, or anything about what was going on with the uncle who loved movies like she did and knew her secret plan to do to college in LA to study filmmaking.

Kit woke up early, even earlier than the time for which she had set her clock.  Bette had left a message on her machine that she and David were at the Brandshears and that they would be leaving for the parade at 8:30.  Bette promised to call as soon as they were on their way to her apartment.  Bette still thought that they would arrive around 11.  She reminded Kit once that David might not want to come and twice that she and David would have to leave by 2.

Kit made coffee, extra strong.  She laughed ironically because she had always thought that it would feel good to wake up after a night of not using.  She didn’t feel good.  She felt like shit.

Kit pulled out the pans and dishes she would need and began.

When Bette had awakened, she had gotten ready very quickly so that she could focus on David, who always dawdled.

The Brandshears had been as close as family for as long as Bette could remember.  Wednesday night, Reginald and Evelyn had been waiting for Bette and David when they arrived.  They had raised children, so knew that exciting David would prevent him from falling asleep, so their greetings were low key and did not include offers of snacks.

Bette had stayed with David until he had fallen asleep and had then joined Reginald and Evelyn for several hours.

Bette made a pot of very strong coffee that she poured in a carafe.  She then made a normal pot for the rest of the household.  She sat in the kitchen hoping her high octane beverage would take effect very soon.

"How much sleep have you been getting?" Evelyn demanded.

Bette had jumped at the sound, but then smiled, "As much as Nathaniel has been getting at Penn."

"Except that he is still sleeping right now and you are up," Evelyn continued as she poured the regular coffee into a mug.

    1. What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.

    2. What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.

    3. wasn’t expecting an update on this one but surprise surprise, I new I didn’t wake up at 5am for nothing. Thanks for the update looking forward the next part!!

    4. I’m thrilled your embarrassment did not outweigh your will to post!!! I still rate this my favorite holiday story (no matter what holiday it spills over on, lol). The Russ, Shane, and Tina triangle is breaking my heart. Your Alice-antics are priceless! Jenny as a rainbow blur is spot on, lol, and Dana’s thought bubbles are just delightful! Bette’s mission to re-unite mother and son is deeply moving. Please keep going, I’m good for the ride until St. Patrick’s Day!!! “Erin Go Bragh!” (or is it “Erin go braless”???) SK/C

    5. ”I’m very embarrassed…” – Dear S, if anyone complains we’ll bop’m for you! – re:Spotlight on Authors, Got a link to the pg? (I’ve done maybe 3 posts on other parts of this site; I get lost easily, apparently) – “Point symmetry”: I’m sorry, but my relatives do not allow me to play with pointy objects. – See? Some of us do read author’s notes!… ;-D

    6. Hey Ice Cream, so glad your choosing to continue over your embarrassment. My word if I didn’t anything becaue of embarrassment I wouldn’t do much.
