Cornucopia ~ Chapter 8 ~ Thanksgiving Day (Part One of Two)

In the kitchen, Tina assembled the final items for dinner.  Bette helped as instructed, well aware that Tina had everything organized and it was not an occasion for her input, though some questions were permitted.

"Do you know what everyone is bringing?"

"No.  I left it voluntary.  You know, if something was special to them for Thanksgiving.  No pressure, though.  I have everything covered."

"I hope Kit is bringing her cornbread."

    "We’ll see."

At one point, Tina asked Bette, "Is David coming?"

"He’s on call but he said he would try."

    "That’s a ‘no.’ right?"

    "Probably."

Later, Bette moved so that she stood behind Tina.  She wrapped her arms around her partner’s waist and rested her head on her shoulder.  After a few moments like that, Bette pulled Tina around so that they faced one another.

"Baby, I have to keep stirring that sauce," Tina whined as she tried to turn back.

"It can wait for a second," Bette resisted Tina attempt to squirm away and, with her gaze, demanded Tina’s full attention. Tina settled and waited expectantly.

"Thank you.  For all of this," Bette gently kissed Tina.  "For making this the first of many family celebrations."

Tina smiled the tender smile reserved for Bette, "Decades of celebrations.  Our children and great-grandchildren," she  reached up to kiss Bette.  "One day, there will be a baby Bette sitting at our table."

    "A little Tina," Bette corrected.

    "A little Bettina?"

    "No,"

"Well, by then our family will be so big that we’ll have to have a kiddie table on holidays."

"As long as someone else gets stuck cutting up the turkey pieces for the little kids."

    Thanksgiving Day, 1988

Tina had ridden the whole ten hours on the bus to New York with one of the three great grandmother’s pies in her lap.  The note she had left alerting her parents to her trip to New York also had announced the presence of the other two pies.

She was happy when her mind was crowded with fears about her parents’ reactions and her imagination took flight when considering their possible punishments.  She tried hard to concentrate on the book she had brought with her, but the lights in the overnight bus were dim.  She thought over and over again, revisiting topics repeatedly, about her friends, her plans about her future (if her parents ever again allowed her to leave the house), the boys she thought were cute, her classes, track, music, clothes.  She was willing to think about anything except her Uncle Russ and what she would discover when she arrived.  But just because she wasn’t willing to think about such things, didn’t mean she didn’t think about them anyway.

    1. What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.

    2. What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.

    3. wasn’t expecting an update on this one but surprise surprise, I new I didn’t wake up at 5am for nothing. Thanks for the update looking forward the next part!!

    4. I’m thrilled your embarrassment did not outweigh your will to post!!! I still rate this my favorite holiday story (no matter what holiday it spills over on, lol). The Russ, Shane, and Tina triangle is breaking my heart. Your Alice-antics are priceless! Jenny as a rainbow blur is spot on, lol, and Dana’s thought bubbles are just delightful! Bette’s mission to re-unite mother and son is deeply moving. Please keep going, I’m good for the ride until St. Patrick’s Day!!! “Erin Go Bragh!” (or is it “Erin go braless”???) SK/C

    5. ”I’m very embarrassed…” – Dear S, if anyone complains we’ll bop’m for you! – re:Spotlight on Authors, Got a link to the pg? (I’ve done maybe 3 posts on other parts of this site; I get lost easily, apparently) – “Point symmetry”: I’m sorry, but my relatives do not allow me to play with pointy objects. – See? Some of us do read author’s notes!… ;-D

    6. Hey Ice Cream, so glad your choosing to continue over your embarrassment. My word if I didn’t anything becaue of embarrassment I wouldn’t do much.
