Cornucopia ~ Chapter 8 ~ Thanksgiving Day (Part One of Two)
–
Mummy, I think we used every bowl in the apartment."
"Not the meissen."
–
When they seemed to about to finish, Helena frowned and moved to a bag that had been pushed to a far corner of the counter. As she reached for the bag and displayed it to her mother, she asked "Mummy, when do we use these?"
"Marshmallows?" the confused mother replied.
Helena nodded, "They were in the food baskets. As one man left, he pulled the bag out and threw it on the table, muttering that he hated marshmallows."
"Are they for hot chocolate?"
"I thought so, but there was no hot chocolate in the baskets."
"We can ask Hannah tomorrow."
"But Mummy, what if it is part of a traditional dish? We don’t want to miss something."
Peggy looked at her daughter and sighed. "We’ll call Hannah. We can ask our question and give her assurances that we haven’t burned down her kitchen."
–
When done, mother and child sat at the kitchen table, worn out from their work. Each drank Coca Cola from the can. Helena had been surprised not only at the beverage choice but that her mother, devotee of the finest crystal glasses, was drinking from a can.
Helena’s clothes were a mess. It was difficult to tell that her sweater had been burgundy-colored when she entered the kitchen that morning. Even Peggy, during their stint, had spilled a small amount of heavy cream on her sleeve. That stain could be easily removed at the cleaners though Helena’s sweater would most likely be retired from Helena’s wardrobe.
As they sat and sipped, each felt the shared accomplishment and smiled at the other.

Shane had spent thirty minutes on the telephone with the Butterball hotline lady, who was especially helpful when she learned that the little girl was trying to prepare a surprise Thanksgiving Day dinner for her sick mother. The woman, concerned about the child’s control of bacteria, had convinced Shane to bake the stuffing separately from the turkey. The rest of the meal had been prepared the night before with Russ and only needed heating and assembling. The nice woman dictated a list of directions to Shane, and the little girl ended the conversation happy and reassured.

nothing to be embarrassed about, holidays are one big blur to me right now anyway…great update
What a pleasant surprise. Doesn’t matter if the story is out of sync with the calendar, you evoke the time anyway. Too bad Jenny couldn’t have inherited a little more sanity from Drew. You made me google McLean, but it was worth it.
whoa! u have parades at Thanksgiving? Such humor, pathos and detail. magnificent. Happy holidays.
What a wonderful chapter with present day events along with past events intermingled within the scope of the post. Will the cast ever remember meeting each other as young teenagers? Can’t wait for the next post to appear for my reading pleasure.
wasn’t expecting an update on this one but surprise surprise, I new I didn’t wake up at 5am for nothing. Thanks for the update looking forward the next part!!
I’m thrilled your embarrassment did not outweigh your will to post!!! I still rate this my favorite holiday story (no matter what holiday it spills over on, lol). The Russ, Shane, and Tina triangle is breaking my heart. Your Alice-antics are priceless! Jenny as a rainbow blur is spot on, lol, and Dana’s thought bubbles are just delightful! Bette’s mission to re-unite mother and son is deeply moving. Please keep going, I’m good for the ride until St. Patrick’s Day!!! “Erin Go Bragh!” (or is it “Erin go braless”???) SK/C
”I’m very embarrassed…” – Dear S, if anyone complains we’ll bop’m for you! – re:Spotlight on Authors, Got a link to the pg? (I’ve done maybe 3 posts on other parts of this site; I get lost easily, apparently) – “Point symmetry”: I’m sorry, but my relatives do not allow me to play with pointy objects. – See? Some of us do read author’s notes!… ;-D
