Tina slowly enters the room, still holding onto Bette for support.
“Tina could I talk to you?” Kathleen softly says.
“Yes, you can. But not alone.” Tina says a little harsh.
Kathleen nods her head.
“Why, don’t we get into the living room?” Chris suggests.
They all walk back into the living room. Tina doesn’t sit down, she walks over to one of the corners facing the sofa. The others take a seat. Bette stands by Tina.
Tina looks at her mother with a look that says ‘go on, talk’. Kathleen gets the look.
“I don’t know where to start.” She starts.
“Well, why don’t you start with explaining how a mother could turn her back on her child just because who she chooses to love? And don’t give me the ‘I’m Christian’ version.” Tina says in a harsh voice.
“Tina I don’t deny what I did was wrong, very wrong. I hate myself every day for what I did. But I grew up with knowing that being a ***** person is a sin. And I believe the bible. I’ve spent these 6 years evaluating myself, questioning my beliefs. And no matter how much I think about it, I still don’t approve of the lifestyle, but my love for you is so much stronger than the bible. I felt hurt and kept asking myself ‘did I fail you in some way?’ And then I thought that you chose to get me and your father angry, that you were in a rampage stage. I off course know that that was not the case.” Kathleen says and takes a little break, she sobs and tries to wipe away the tears, but he keep coming.
“That day, you took a big part of my heart out. The hurt you all caused, it will stay with me forever, and I will never have that whole piece back. A large part of it I have back, thanks to Bette and to my friends back in
Bette is my life, and I’m going to spend the rest of my life with her. I didn’t choose to be with women. It happened. I dated boys, but it never felt right. Then I met this girl, and suddenly I knew who I was, it was like a large weight had been pulled off of me. I didn’t have any long relationships before I was 18. It lasted a year.” Tina says and looks at her mother then at Sarah and Chris. “I knew since I was 16. But I also knew that you wouldn’t approve it, that’s why I waited so long, because then I would be old enough to take the punches you would throw at me. But I never dreamt the reality that really happened.” Tina continues.

wow. that was so touching . what a heartfelt storyline . i am very lucky b/c my parents totally accepted who I am but it so saddens me that so many people have this exact experience. Thanx for your words . keep them coming – i’ll too look often for your next chapter.
oh i forgot to say that Bettes mom is going to freak when she knows about the wedding plan and that Bette wants to share her money with Tina she will drop dead..lol..ok night

That was overwhelmingly happy and sad. Her mother took a big step as did Tina. But now Tina can let go of some of the pain and hurt…she can release some if not most of her anger at her family for abandoning her. Loved this story..please continue on.

Very intense chapter, Lauren. Even if – fortunately – everybody didn’t know such awful familial rejection, we are all able to deeply relate to.
And I’m with others here : if the so narrow-minded father would never do any gesture, well, that would be his own burden and Tina is already surrounded enough with the rest of the family. Too bad for the last stone-hearted “Christian”.
I also highly appreciated Tina’s way to always keep Bette next to her, making clear that both have to be accepted together or nothing.
