    Nothing tastes as sweet as what I can’t have…

    Ashley gently pulled her wife from her chest staring into her eyes as she whispered, “When I lost…the baby…I thought I could never hurt that way again, but this…this hurts so much more…watching your eyes dim more every day…until now…all the light is gone Spence…all of it. I just wanted to find someway to put it back…to put us back together again.” Using her thumbs, Ashley gently wiped her wife’s tears away. “I called Susan…she told me about this procedure…Spence I didn’t even know this was possible…” Spencer swallowed, closing her eyes. “What are you talking about Ashley?”

    “I didn’t want to tell you until I was sure I could do it. Honey…I’ve been taking fertility treatments.”

    The hammock rocked violently as Spencer sat up suddenly, jumping to the ground. Shaking uncontrollably, she closed her eyes struggling against the flood of jealously surging through her body. Ashley felt her stomach drop when her wife finally opened her eyes, turning to face her. She had never seen Spencer’s eyes so cold. Something in her broke as a raspy, bitter laugh filled the empty space between them. “It just makes so much fucking sense that you can even get pregnant! After all the shit that you put in your body…all the people you sleep with…I don’t believe this…it’s funny. It’s all just so goddamn funny!”

    Ashley leapt from the hammock, wrapping her arms around her wife as her sarcastic, barking laughter turned to sobs. Spencer fell heavily into her arms, her legs buckling. Easing them slowly to the ground, Ashley sat cradling her wife, rocking her gently in her arms. “It’s…not fair….I did everything, Ash. I did everything right…”

    The women stared at each other coldly. Christine sipped her coffee, momentarily allowing her mind to wonder. She smiled thinking about throwing the scalding hot liquid at Paula’s face. Sighing, she remembered her daughter’s strained voice. Even through the phone the desperation came through. Mom, she’s never been this bad. She placed the paper cup down gently on the table. “Chris, it’s always a pleasant surprise when you drop by unannounced in the middle of the night.” She matched Paula’s bright, fake smile, “Hmm…well normally I’d worry about interrupting something…but I’ve seen your husband.” Snatching Christine’s cup away, Paula made a show of emptying the remaining coffee into the sink before throwing it in the trash, “I don’t have to listen to your filth in my own house. Get out!”

    23. i think this story is a little above my reading level…lol. i know it jumps back and forth…but im confused as tro when it does and what exactly is going on with spencer in labor…or not? oh man…im lost. but from what i do understand…i like it! lol.
