The Story of Us – (Chapter: 4: God Bless Mommy and Matchbox Cars (Pt. II))

Every piece of sky is a memory
    Hanging there over each day
No matter how hard I try
    I can’t find the words

Ashley’s eyes shot open when her wife’s hand was suddenly pulled from her own. Grimacing at the rawness of her throat, she desperately tried to speak. It wasn’t until Sara roughly grabbed her shoulders turning her away from her wife that Ashley realized she was already screaming. Like an old silent movie, she watched captive as Sara’s lips moved. All of the sounds instantly becoming lost, drowning in the deafening rush of blood to her head. “Get her out of here, now!” Two male orderlies rushed to her side, grabbing her. Struggling, Ashley screamed, twisting her body, desperately trying to reach her wife. Agonizing pain started deep inside her chest as she watched Spencer’s hand slowly unfurl. Ashley’s eyes watered, focused on the delicate, perfect fingers just beyond her reach.

The large cloud of smoke slowly dissipated, fueled by the breeze blowing through the car’s open windows. Ashley took one more long drag before tossing the glowing butt to the ground. Calm down for fuck’s sake! Patting her pocket, she barely resisted the urge to light another. Her hand fell to her lap as her eyes widened. Crap! Ashley frantically began searching around the car, her stomach twisting nervously. Closing her eyes, she breathed a loud sigh of relief when she found a little red and white tin of mints. Grimacing, she popped one mint in her mouth. Opening the door, Ashley stared at the tin before grabbing two more mints, hurriedly shoving them into her mouth.

Eyes watering, Ashley slowly trudged along the driveway, kicking small rocks with the toe of her boot. She leaned against the front door pressing her forehead against the heavy wood. Using her fingertip, she hesitantly stabbed at the doorbell. Please…Spence… The door swung open revealing a taller brunette’s angrily flashing eyes. Gulping, Ashley took a step back from her mother. “Uh…hey.”

Christine swatted Ashley with her rolled up newspaper, landing a solid blow to the top of her head. “Hey? That’s all you’ve got to say for yourself?!” She swung again, this time catching her daughter’s ear. “I shouldn’t even let you into this house! Four weeks…it took you four goddamn weeks to get your shit together?!”
