    #TLW 10 – Coz I love you

Bette bit her lip and I could tell she was going to flip. “Why don’t you just laugh openly? No need to spare my feelings”

    “Coz I love you”

I see Bette’s expression quickly go from shock to anger.

“Never mind I was thinking out loud. I’ve been doing it all morning.”  I give her a reassuring smile, and then point to the tap that’s still running. Her hands seem to have frozen with my impromptu revelation “Turn the tap off”

She does as told then looks me in the eye. With a cautious look on her face this time she shakes off the residue water from the oranges she’s just rinsed. Without breaking eye contact she places them next to the plums, grapes, prunes, kale, pineapple and bananas.

The bananas, that’s how it all started. Well, I think it may have actually been her scent.

Yes, it all started with her scent…..

I rolled out of bed this morning then rolled right back in.   I clutched the pillow I’ve come to know as Bette’s pillow tightly against my chest.

It’s been three days since Bette’s shared my Bed. I’ve changed my sheets since then but no matter how many times I change the sheets and pillow covers, her scent still lingers. How was that possible?

“It must be coz I love you” I’d whispered to the pillow, rubbing my cheek against it as if it were Bette herself.

The pillow wasn’t Bette though. It wasn’t curvy, smooth or as luscious as her. Under the pressure of my arms Bette would have moaned and snuggled further into me – the pillow’s unresisting cushiness simply flattered. But as the old saying goes, beggars can’t be choosers.  In the absence of the woman the enigmatic pillow that carries her scent will do just fine.

    I inhaled deeply.

    I exhaled.

I sighed. “Coz I love you”

Laying there on the bed snuggling with my Bette pillow, images of Bette rubbing the pillow all over herself while I was in the bathroom, or something of the sort, knifed through my head. A naked Bette standing by my bedside rubbing a pillow all over her body so as to leave a bit of herself behind for me – now that’s an image worth carrying. I giggled at the absurdity of the picture my somnolent mind had conceived.

    1. Ally, this is truly fun to read. I love the bit about Tina realizing the benefits of her piano training as it benefits her lovemaking skills. That was an amusing, quirky thought. Their texting narrative was clever, too. I could really feel Bette’s mounting insistence in the zings she texted to wear down Tina’s resistance.

I’m enjoying a writing exercise, too, of creating those moments off screen in this crazy place I decided to drop into that takes place somewhere in the season 5 narrative after their She Bar kiss. I tried my hand at writing one of Bette’s mental melt down inner narrative screeds. I hadn’t thought about going as far back into their history as you did. It’s a rich place to write from. Good choice, and nice going.
