    Author Notes:

    A seldom Monday off.

    Even though she promised Mikela earlier that she would not go into work today Candace decides to go to the Center, but only to take some measurements. Usually Candace takes her old Chevy truck when driving around LA, but since she doesnt have to go to any job site which could have potentially hazardous conditions for Coby, she decides to take it instead. After removing the tarp and doing her usual visual inspection Candace climbs into the drivers seat and starts Coby up.

    As she is driving down the highway Candace thinks about the measurements she needs to take once she reaches the Center. She wants to kick herself for agreeing to take this job, even though it is for a good cause she just feels so guilty about working with Tina. She hopes that Tina wont be there or is at least too busy to talk to her. Its bad enough that I cheated of Mikela, worse yet that I cheated with a married woman and worst of all, I did it even after meeting her wife and again after accepting a contract job from her.

    With the ever-present guilt beating down on her she decides to call Bette at the CAC and ask her to meet her for lunch. At first, Candace thinks that she should just call and end it over the phone, but not knowing proper etiquette for ending an affair, feels it is rude and she at least owes Bette a face-to-face. She flips open her cell-phone and dials Bettes office number. James, Bettes assistant, answers.

    James: Good Morning, California Art Centers Director Bette Porters office. How may I assist you?

    Candace: Hello, this is Candace Jewel. May I speak to Ms. Porter?

    James: Hello Ms. Jewel. May I please add my praise amongst everyone for the display for Provocations? You did a wonderful job.

    Candace: thank you.

    James: You welcome. (Pauses for a beat) Ms. Porter is not in today. Would you like to leave a message? Or speak to someone else?

    Candace: No. Just tell her I called.

    James: alright then. Have a nice

    Candace: Im sorryuhm James? Its James right?

    James: Yes

    Candace: Is Bette – I mean is Ms. Porter on vacation?

    James: Well I shouldnt

    Candace: Thats OK, I shouldnt have asked. I was just curious.

    James: Well actually, she called in sick today, so she may be in tomorrow.

    Candace: Oh, OK, thank you James.

    James: You welcome and have a nice day.

    Candace hangs up the phone and thinks about Bette calling in sick, I hope she is alright.

    The Center***

    Upon entering the Center Candace is greeted by a volunteer.

    Volunteer: Hi, May I help you?

    Candace: Hi, Im Candace Jewel, of Jewel-Stone Creations. I came here last week and talked to Tina Kennard about my company doing some remodeling here.

    Volunteer: Ok. Tina is not here today but Oscar is. Wait here while I go get him.

    As the volunteer went off in search of Oscar, Candace takes a moment to ponder, So Tina is also absent from work. Maybe they both decided to play hooky. Well good for them. If Tina and Bette are off somewhere reconnecting, then the ending of this affair will be that much easier.
