The Adventures of Bette Porter and Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 3, Chapter 1)

I could hear the television coming from the great room, that included the kitchen, dining room and family room. I cut through the living room to see Howie stretched out on his recliner. He was dressed in a white t-shirt, camouflage lounging pants with slippers on his feet. His brown hair was cut close as if he had just gotten a haircut which meant he had had his mustache trimmed as well. He was watching a show on fly fishing. He glanced at me and looked away. I stopped and stood a few feet away from him. He looked back at me.

“I’m surprised you’re alone,” he said, coldly.

“I told you I would be.” I changed the subject. “Is Mary in her room?”

    “Yes.”

I turned and backtracked, then went down the hall to Mary’s bedroom. She had the door shut. I knocked and when she said, “Come in,” I did. She was at her desk doing homework. Her face lit up when she saw me and she jumped out of her chair to give me a hug.

Mary was taller than me. She was five foot eight inches to my five foot six. Her brown hair was long and thick with a natural wave that she was forever trying to straighten out. Her eyes were shaped round like her dad’s except that his were green and hers were brown. The only makeup she wore besides lipstick was to accentuate her eyes – just the lashes, not the brows. She had a fine nose, a wide mouth and had great pride in keeping her teeth pearly white.

I watched her with pride as she chatted in her fast, teenage way. She had a bubbly personality. She asked if I had a good trip and when I said I did she asked me several quick questions about Maui.

It was a nice exchange. She really was a very pretty young lady with natural feminine gestures in spite of so many athletic years of playing soccer. Academically she was very bright but still immature about her social life. There was a new boy on the front door step every other week.

I soon left her to her home work, since she was studying for a Spanish test. I shut her door and headed back to her father.

Howie had gone out the front door to get my luggage. He had already brought in my big suitcase, left it inside the entry and went back for the rest. I went into the family room and sat down on the sofa next to his chair. I saw that he had been drinking a scotch and water. The glass was sitting on an end table between us, full of ice and an amber blend.

I heard him set the rest of my luggage down and then come back to the family room.

    1. I got a weird feeling it’s going to be rough. I hope Howie won’t hit Sis, but if he wil thank god Bette will be right there to take care of her. You are right we need a seatbelt.

    2. Sissee, I can feel the tension between Sissee and Howie. Since you told us Sissee will not break Bette’s heart, my second guess is that it would be Bette who would break Sissee’s heart. My my my, with Jodie in the future picture, I feel sad for Sissee. The only positive thing I can forsee is that Sissee does love her kids and Howie and vice versa. She will have the support from them. I just feel bad for her and Bette, they deserve to be with each other for a long time.

    3. Bette’s Bette, That is a lof of speculation from you and I best not tip off where we are going with the story line. It really is interesting though to get my reader’s point of view. Thanks for your input.

    4. Here we go…… I really hope Bette doesn’t go over to Henry’s house. I just don’t see how that would help. Can’t wait for the next chapter. Thanks!

    5. ld18, You are right about that. I guess that is why there are so many breaking up songs, it’s a sad thing for everyone. But even Oprah had a show on about married women who were having affairs with other women. Her parting comments were that life is too short, follow your heart.
