The Adventures of Bette Porter and Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 3, Chapter 1)

And my mom and my dad. My two sisters and my brother. Other extended relatives and immediate friends. What would they all think? How would they react? Who would I lose? Who among them would understand and support me?

The only thing I could be certain of is that what ever happens, it is time for me to make this move, to take this stand, to be with the woman I love.

I glanced at the time. It was just before 9 p.m. I reached for my cell, flipped it open and pressed the first speed dial option.

    “Hello?” said Howie.

“Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I’m on my way home.”

    “Okay.”

    “Are the kids there?”

    “Just Mary.”

    “And Charlie?”

“He got called to work at five.”

Charlie worked at a pizza parlor. He was on a list of part-time workers and always glad to be able to make some spending money whenever he could.

“Okay. I’m on the 57, just passing Anaheim Stadium.”

    “Alright.”

    “Bye.”

He hung up without a goodbye.

As soon as I closed my cell, it rang. It was Bette. She just wanted me to know that she was home and that Tina still had some of her things there. She tried calling Tina’s cell but, as usual, her voice message came on so Bette left a message for her to call back – one more of many requests she had made in the last few days. We bolstered each other up again and before Bette said goodbye she said she had a few more calls to make and, as she had said earlier, if she did not get any satisfactory answers about Angelica, she was going to drive over to Henry’s house. We promised to be in touch.

When I pulled into our cul de sac it was very quiet. There was a time that we had five cars to park, with each of us owning one. Our ranch style home had a two car garage but Howie had built so many shelves on both sides that only one car fit. That left four fighting for space in the driveway or street. There was only one car in the drive tonight but I did not want to get hemmed in so I parked in the street, leaving my luggage behind and walked to our double oak, front doors over which a light was shining. My heart was in my throat when I let myself in.

    1. I got a weird feeling it’s going to be rough. I hope Howie won’t hit Sis, but if he wil thank god Bette will be right there to take care of her. You are right we need a seatbelt.

    2. Sissee, I can feel the tension between Sissee and Howie. Since you told us Sissee will not break Bette’s heart, my second guess is that it would be Bette who would break Sissee’s heart. My my my, with Jodie in the future picture, I feel sad for Sissee. The only positive thing I can forsee is that Sissee does love her kids and Howie and vice versa. She will have the support from them. I just feel bad for her and Bette, they deserve to be with each other for a long time.

    3. Bette’s Bette, That is a lof of speculation from you and I best not tip off where we are going with the story line. It really is interesting though to get my reader’s point of view. Thanks for your input.

    4. Here we go…… I really hope Bette doesn’t go over to Henry’s house. I just don’t see how that would help. Can’t wait for the next chapter. Thanks!

    5. ld18, You are right about that. I guess that is why there are so many breaking up songs, it’s a sad thing for everyone. But even Oprah had a show on about married women who were having affairs with other women. Her parting comments were that life is too short, follow your heart.
