The Adventures of Bette Porter and Sissee Gardner Schmidt After Tina (Part 3, Chapter 1)
With shortness of breath I said, “I love you too.” My hand was still under her chin. I stretched my fingers to the side of her face and held her firmly as I kissed her lips quickly. Once. Twice. Three times. I dropped my hand to open the door, pressing the handle down. The light came on. She pulled the door shut. The light went out.
She slipped her left hand under my arm and drew me closer as she kissed me passionately again. Neither one of us wanted to let go. Finally, she, I, one of us broke away from the kiss and we pressed our heads together, cheek to cheek, holding each other closely, breathing deeply.
“I’ll call you,” I said. “Yes,” she said. A whole minute went by. Then, I pulled myself free and opened the door. Once outside I turned, leaned down and told her again that I loved her. She nodded, tried to smile and said, “I love you too.“
Once I got back in my van and drove away I glanced at the empty seat next to me and got a sinking feeling. For a moment I wanted to stop and reconsider her offer of coming with me but I fought it. I could see her headlights in my rearview mirror as we left the building. She followed me to the I-405 where we split. She went north. I went south.
Tension seized me as I drove to Orange Grove very much alone. I was suddenly terrified. How do I face a man who for the most part has been good to me and tell him I do not want to be married any more? How do I explain that even though we enjoyed a satisfactory sex life together my heart was never in it? Will he understand that while he may have physically satisfied me at times, I was emotionally bereft?
He knew I was in love with Bette that Christmas in 1985. Should I tell him I never stopped loving her?
And my dear sweet children. What will they think about their mother, leaving their father to go live with another woman and oh no, not just any woman, but one whom they always saw as mom‘s best friend. We never got into the “Auntie Bette” mode. They just called her “Bette” and each of them had the greatest respect and admiration for her. They lit up every time they saw her. Will they still feel the same way?

Please don’t break Bette’s heart…..
honda90, Sissee the writer would never let Sissee the character break Bette’s heart. I promise.
I got a weird feeling it’s going to be rough. I hope Howie won’t hit Sis, but if he wil thank god Bette will be right there to take care of her. You are right we need a seatbelt.
September, Howie is going to get mean and hurtful but the only thing he’ll do with his hands is use them to drink.
Sissee, I can feel the tension between Sissee and Howie. Since you told us Sissee will not break Bette’s heart, my second guess is that it would be Bette who would break Sissee’s heart. My my my, with Jodie in the future picture, I feel sad for Sissee. The only positive thing I can forsee is that Sissee does love her kids and Howie and vice versa. She will have the support from them. I just feel bad for her and Bette, they deserve to be with each other for a long time.
Bette’s Bette, That is a lof of speculation from you and I best not tip off where we are going with the story line. It really is interesting though to get my reader’s point of view. Thanks for your input.
Here we go…… I really hope Bette doesn’t go over to Henry’s house. I just don’t see how that would help. Can’t wait for the next chapter. Thanks!
This is gonna be tough for Sissee. Breakups, even ones that will eventually bring good things, are never easy. Thanks for the update.
kbergin47, Yes, Bette does go to Henry’s as you will see in Chapter 3.
ld18, You are right about that. I guess that is why there are so many breaking up songs, it’s a sad thing for everyone. But even Oprah had a show on about married women who were having affairs with other women. Her parting comments were that life is too short, follow your heart.
