“I didn’t sleep very well. I need an espresso.” Bette’s tiredness is inflected in her voice.
“Where is Benjamin this morning?” Melvin asks looking around.
“Well, he’s at the hotel. He decided that we might like a little family time together.” Kit answers.
“He’s staying at a hotel. He doesn’t live here?”
“No Dad. He lives in Portland, Oregon.”
“Portland, Oregon? What’s in Portland, Oregon?”
Kit struggles with an answer trying to figure out exactly how to phrase it. As she is about to speak Bette kicks her under the table and answers for her.
“It’s probably what he needs when he’s working. There are all these people clamoring after him and he probably just needs to get away.”
“Makes perfect sense. Have you been to Portland?” Melvin directs his question at Kit.
“No, no not yet.”
“I really need that espresso, so do you mind?” Bette gets up and pulls her sister to join her.
“Yeah, yeah. Espresso.” Kit says allowing herself to be pulled.
When they get out of hearing distance from their father Bette admonishes her sister. “You can’t tell him Benjamin’s married Kit. He’s so happy now.”
“I hate lying to him.”
“Kit, he asked to spend time with you. Doesn’t it feel good?”
“Yeah. It feels really good, but …”
“Then why don’t you just enjoy it for a while, and let him enjoy it. At least he approves of Benjamin which is more than I can say about Tina.”
“Oh Bette, I’m so sorry. How’s it going with Tina.”
“She and I are doing OK. We still have some work ahead of us but we’ve come a long way. I was on the phone with her this morning when I picked him up, and he couldn’t even be civil to her. After 8 years he’s still calling her Ms. Kennard and barely acknowledging her existence, yet he just immediately embraced Benjamin after just one evening.”
“Well I doubt he would be embracing him if he knew that the man was cheating on his wife with me.”
“Kit somehow I don’t think that would faze him, considering he cheated on both our mothers.”
“Touché. Let’s get those espressos going.”

“Here you go Daddy.” Kit says placing an espresso in front of him when they return to the table.

Hey BAT2012, i didn’t comment on the previous chapters, but i still read and enjoy this story.
I look forward how you are gonna try to change Melvin. I believe he really loves Bette, but is one big emotional handicapt man and very set in his opinions and views.
It is good to see Bette and Tina are able to support each other and hopefully they will find a way back to a healthy,strong and loving relationship.
Bette is right about Helena “fucking ” Peabody and i look forward to the moment Bette will kick her ass. Bette deals with her in a way that i admire.

Aww, Melvin just ruined my morning by being his usual overly grumpy a**hole self, just mean and hateful. I can hardly wait to see how you can make a positive change in Melvin, that will be a bloody miracle. Bette was very right in what she said to Kit, about melvin liking benjamin or the idea of him before even meeting him; that he wouldn’t think anything was wrong with her being with a married man because of his own ideas about the subject. Thanks for posting.
