Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 26C

“Yes, Ms. Kennard.  Mr. McGhee’s been expecting your call.  Please hold.”

It didn’t take long.  “Steph’nie Kennard.  What the hell are you doin’, Missy?”

    “Mr. McGhee, I’ve been arrested.”

“I’m not surprised.  Everybody’s talkin’ down here ‘bout how you cleaned out that football player’s house and then moved from your townhouse.  I hope you’re gonna send your landlord what he’s due?”

“Yeah, yeah, I will.  Look, Mr. McGhee.  This thing with Peter’s got me in some trouble, but I didn’t really do anything wrong.  The stuff I took was mine.”

“He says no.  That’s what I heard.”

“I’ll deal with it once I get out.  It’s just a terrible, terrible misunderstanding, Mr. McGhee.  Can you help me?”

“Well, no.  I’m not the type of lawyer you need for this, honey.  I know someone from law school who practices out there.  He’s an entertainment lawyer, but he might be some help to ya.  You know those movie star folk always got their tails in and out of trouble.  What about your doc-boyfriend?  Cain’t he help you?”

“That’s not an option,” she said.  Talk about bad timing.  Why she chose this morning to have that all or nothing fight with Henry was beyond her.

    “When’s your arraignment?”

“Four-thirty.  I don’t have much time to find myself a lawyer.”

“Shoot,” McGhee said after thinking for a moment.  “Even if I could git to my old boy, that wouldn’t give him no time at all.  Did you call yo’ Mama?”

“No,” she said incredulously.  How could he even think for a second that she’d contact her?

“I know you don’t wanna, but you need to think about reachin’ out to her.  I’ll do what I can, but your best bet now is a public defender.”

Stephanie groaned.  “Just shoot me, then.  What chance am I gonna have with a Public Defender?”

“Better chance than without one,” he said firmly.

Stephanie could hear McGhee tapping on his computer keyboard.  “Lemme see what my folks can do and either you’ll have yourself a lawyer at your arraignment or you won’t. Let me git to work on that.”  He paused and then said, “And Steph’nie, you know my services ain’t free.”

    1. i am once again left speechless at your incredible ability to weave a tale. i actually yelped in excitement when Angie was safe but at the same time, believe it or not, felt somewhat sorry for Josh. only your writing could evoke that somewhat schizophrenic sympathy.I’m also a bit worried at the introduction of Jodi into the story but hope that after all that we’ve been through with Bette and Tina to date, she will not pose a threat to their relationship.as for all of the other characters and their stories, i am finding them entertaining and interesting as well which is not usually the case when reading as i’m pretty much just a Tina/Bette fan. this again, is testimony to your ability to ability to entertain.thanks again for the story and the time and effort that must be involved. looking forward as always to reading more.

    2. I’ve spent the past two days reading the whole thing, and honestly? It’s great. Really, really great. The characters are well written and adhere to canon, your reweaving of the events of Season 3 into this alternative version is not only really well done, but in my mind — preferable. As for the Jodi issue, if she’s like every other non-core character in your work (herself, but changed), I’ll be very happy to see where that goes. I do wonder, though, moments after Bette is reunited with Tina and her baby for the first time in weeks, she wanders off to talk to Jodi? That seems a little… I don’t know, inhuman? But, hey, if that’s my only complaint in 26 chapters, consider it an amazing feat. I’m a huge Danish fan, and I’m happy to see you keeping the love alive. Would love to see more of that relationship in your writing, but generally I think the chapters are fairly good about being even with their time. You’re prolific. Are you really spitting out this much in three days? Because if so, that’s incredible. I mean, really, really exceptional. Thanks for writing this, it’s a great read, and I can’t wait to see more of it.

    3. Thank goodness Angelica is safe. I’m glad Boden was there. Um, not too excited about Jodi showing up in this story :). Can’t wait for the celebration…hope everyone gets a little ‘private celebration’ time . You’ve really spoiled us this last week Portia. Thanks for this wonderful fic and don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Bette better mess up of jodi!! yeah for angie being okay… now it’s time for the port-kennards to get on with their lives. tina needs to finish her rehab.i wonder what else steph. did what else is she hiding??? great update!!:)

    5. Ahhhh… I can breathe now. That was tense, but Baby A is safe, finally! I’m so glad there was a third person there and Boden clocked that whining maggot Josh. Although, I think Bette would have ripped him apart eventually anyway. Hels is leaving, which is a shame, but her heart’s somewhere else… So! Ol’ Steph’s about to get her comeuppance, big time. I hope Peter gets his money back, as well as his furniture. I’m dreading the stuff coming out that was on that list of hers. Girl needs help, if she can survive prison. This was so good, I can’t wait for the next post. thanks Portia.
