Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 26C

She didn’t see her mother who was there.  Standing far in the back of the courtroom, Theresa watched the prosecutor rush out of the room, no doubt racing to her next case somewhere else in the building.  Mr. Danessi spoke briefly to Stephanie as Theresa walked up to the front of the room.  At the gate, she stopped and said, “Stephanie?  Stephanie, honey?”

Stephanie’s head whipped around.  “What are you doing here?”

    “Henry called me.”

“Henry?”  Stephanie looked around the courtroom for him.

    “He wouldn’t come.  Y’all had a fight?”

“Not your business.”  Stephanie nervously tossed her hair over her shoulder.

“What can I do?” Theresa asked.

“Nothing.  You can’t do a thing for me, Mom.”  Stephanie felt the heat rise in her face.  If her mother hadn’t said anything to Henry; if she had just kept her trap shut, she could have let her past go and begun a new life with him.  But no, her mother couldn’t wait to give him the salacious details of the rape.  Henry was just waiting for a reason to get away from her.  She knew that he wouldn’t have cared about the stupid AMEX card, but that was as good a reason as any to end it with her.  No man wanted to be with a girl who had been fucked by her father.   He had been chomping at the bit to get away.  Fine.  He wanted to be gone.  He won’t have to give her another thought.  Once she got out, she’d get her stuff and leave.

Danessi turned to Stephanie.  “This is your mother?”

    “Yes, biologically, she is.”

“Your daughter is in a real bind.  We’ll need to come up with b. . .”

“Ah-ah-ah,” Stephanie reprimanded with her forefinger wagging at him.  “I’m your client.  You don’t need to be talking to her.”

    “What about your bail?”

    “I know my options.”

Danessi looked up at Theresa, then at Stephanie and nodded his head.  “Ohhh-kay, then.”  He closed his briefcase and picked it up.  “I’ve got other clients to meet, but I’ll be down at Lynwood this evening.  I’ll see you around 7:30?”

    “Lynwood?”

“That’s the LA County Correctional Facility for Women—Century Station in Lynwood.  You would have gone there first if your arraignment hadn’t come up so quickly.  It’s not a nice place.”

“I wouldn’t expect that it would be.”  Stephanie was full of bravado.

“I mean, you’re going to find the experience hard.”  Danessi leaned in, whispered in Stephanie’s ear, “It’s fuckin’ scary.  That’s no exaggeration.”  He stood erect, watched her, hoped she’d understand his warning, and let her mother assist her.

    “Stephanie, do you need anything?”

“What part of no, don’t you understand?  No,” she said without turning to face her.

The bailiff came forward to lead Stephanie out of the courtroom.  Before 7:30 rolled around, Stephanie would be humming a different tune.

    1. i am once again left speechless at your incredible ability to weave a tale. i actually yelped in excitement when Angie was safe but at the same time, believe it or not, felt somewhat sorry for Josh. only your writing could evoke that somewhat schizophrenic sympathy.I’m also a bit worried at the introduction of Jodi into the story but hope that after all that we’ve been through with Bette and Tina to date, she will not pose a threat to their relationship.as for all of the other characters and their stories, i am finding them entertaining and interesting as well which is not usually the case when reading as i’m pretty much just a Tina/Bette fan. this again, is testimony to your ability to ability to entertain.thanks again for the story and the time and effort that must be involved. looking forward as always to reading more.

    2. I’ve spent the past two days reading the whole thing, and honestly? It’s great. Really, really great. The characters are well written and adhere to canon, your reweaving of the events of Season 3 into this alternative version is not only really well done, but in my mind — preferable. As for the Jodi issue, if she’s like every other non-core character in your work (herself, but changed), I’ll be very happy to see where that goes. I do wonder, though, moments after Bette is reunited with Tina and her baby for the first time in weeks, she wanders off to talk to Jodi? That seems a little… I don’t know, inhuman? But, hey, if that’s my only complaint in 26 chapters, consider it an amazing feat. I’m a huge Danish fan, and I’m happy to see you keeping the love alive. Would love to see more of that relationship in your writing, but generally I think the chapters are fairly good about being even with their time. You’re prolific. Are you really spitting out this much in three days? Because if so, that’s incredible. I mean, really, really exceptional. Thanks for writing this, it’s a great read, and I can’t wait to see more of it.

    3. Thank goodness Angelica is safe. I’m glad Boden was there. Um, not too excited about Jodi showing up in this story :). Can’t wait for the celebration…hope everyone gets a little ‘private celebration’ time . You’ve really spoiled us this last week Portia. Thanks for this wonderful fic and don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Bette better mess up of jodi!! yeah for angie being okay… now it’s time for the port-kennards to get on with their lives. tina needs to finish her rehab.i wonder what else steph. did what else is she hiding??? great update!!:)

    5. Ahhhh… I can breathe now. That was tense, but Baby A is safe, finally! I’m so glad there was a third person there and Boden clocked that whining maggot Josh. Although, I think Bette would have ripped him apart eventually anyway. Hels is leaving, which is a shame, but her heart’s somewhere else… So! Ol’ Steph’s about to get her comeuppance, big time. I hope Peter gets his money back, as well as his furniture. I’m dreading the stuff coming out that was on that list of hers. Girl needs help, if she can survive prison. This was so good, I can’t wait for the next post. thanks Portia.
