Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 26C

Peggy looked at them somewhat puzzled, but accepted it.  She returned to Whit.  “Whit, darling, thank you for your call.  We needed a bit of good news.  I’ll speak with you this evening.”

Bette glanced out the window and down at the city.  She watched as the land below first revealed houses with Spanish style roofs and pools in the back, then homes cramped together with rectangular and kidney-shaped pools here and there.  That scene faded away to more land than homes, and not long after that, she looked down at mountains.  Today was a day that she couldn’t have predicted in any way.  First, she left her anger management/Buddhist retreat about a week earlier than she planned, because she couldn’t stand being away from her family, then she ended up catching a ride back to LA with Peggy in her expensive, private jet, and now here she was flying in a chartered, company helicopter on the way to the tourist setting of Big Bear.  “It’s my first ride.  Weird being in this helicopter, huh?” she said to Tina, making meaningless conversation as they rode toward their destination.”

“Because of what we’re doing.”  Tina shook her head.  “When I was wif-with Alphaville, I flew in all the time.”

“Oh, right.  That’s right.”  Bette stared out again.  Someone not in the know would see her as a jet-setter, but this day was fucked up.  That’s the only way she could describe it.  She squeezed Tina’s hand as she felt the helicopter begin its descent.  They were in Big Bear to scoop up their daughter who had been kidnapped by some psycho.  This day was nothing like she had anticipated when she drifted off to sleep last night with Tina’s body on her mind.  This day was nothing she could have guessed.  It was a nightmare that would soon be over.  She didn’t feel morose as she had earlier in the day.  The feeling of doom and gloom was gone.  True, she was nervous, desperately worried about Angelica, and wanted to end this with as little drama as possible, but she felt positive, like all would end as it should with Angelica in her arms.  In the limo on the way to Century City from the Center, Tina had explained what was on Josh’s mind.  Bette would grovel, beg forgiveness, even tell him that he could go out with Tina just as long as they got Angie back.

    1. i am once again left speechless at your incredible ability to weave a tale. i actually yelped in excitement when Angie was safe but at the same time, believe it or not, felt somewhat sorry for Josh. only your writing could evoke that somewhat schizophrenic sympathy.I’m also a bit worried at the introduction of Jodi into the story but hope that after all that we’ve been through with Bette and Tina to date, she will not pose a threat to their relationship.as for all of the other characters and their stories, i am finding them entertaining and interesting as well which is not usually the case when reading as i’m pretty much just a Tina/Bette fan. this again, is testimony to your ability to ability to entertain.thanks again for the story and the time and effort that must be involved. looking forward as always to reading more.

    2. I’ve spent the past two days reading the whole thing, and honestly? It’s great. Really, really great. The characters are well written and adhere to canon, your reweaving of the events of Season 3 into this alternative version is not only really well done, but in my mind — preferable. As for the Jodi issue, if she’s like every other non-core character in your work (herself, but changed), I’ll be very happy to see where that goes. I do wonder, though, moments after Bette is reunited with Tina and her baby for the first time in weeks, she wanders off to talk to Jodi? That seems a little… I don’t know, inhuman? But, hey, if that’s my only complaint in 26 chapters, consider it an amazing feat. I’m a huge Danish fan, and I’m happy to see you keeping the love alive. Would love to see more of that relationship in your writing, but generally I think the chapters are fairly good about being even with their time. You’re prolific. Are you really spitting out this much in three days? Because if so, that’s incredible. I mean, really, really exceptional. Thanks for writing this, it’s a great read, and I can’t wait to see more of it.

    3. Thank goodness Angelica is safe. I’m glad Boden was there. Um, not too excited about Jodi showing up in this story :). Can’t wait for the celebration…hope everyone gets a little ‘private celebration’ time . You’ve really spoiled us this last week Portia. Thanks for this wonderful fic and don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Bette better mess up of jodi!! yeah for angie being okay… now it’s time for the port-kennards to get on with their lives. tina needs to finish her rehab.i wonder what else steph. did what else is she hiding??? great update!!:)

    5. Ahhhh… I can breathe now. That was tense, but Baby A is safe, finally! I’m so glad there was a third person there and Boden clocked that whining maggot Josh. Although, I think Bette would have ripped him apart eventually anyway. Hels is leaving, which is a shame, but her heart’s somewhere else… So! Ol’ Steph’s about to get her comeuppance, big time. I hope Peter gets his money back, as well as his furniture. I’m dreading the stuff coming out that was on that list of hers. Girl needs help, if she can survive prison. This was so good, I can’t wait for the next post. thanks Portia.
