Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 26C

“Sir.  Mr. Ogebe, if your wife were Melinda Gates or Julia Roberts or anyone, nothing would change.  There is absolutely nothing we can do for her.  We can’t work any miracles, we can’t turn back the clock.  This is a dreadful thing that has happened to her, you, and your beautiful children.  I’m so sorry.”

Mr. Ogebe wept as he stared down at his wife.  For the past eleven years, every dream he’d ever had had been fulfilled.  He had told Henry about it several times already.  He had come to America, earned a degree from the University of Southern California, met a woman at USC whom he had fallen for the moment he laid eyes on her.  She was from Louisiana and he loved her Creole accent and she loved his.  She had been an engineering major and always talked about running a construction site.  She put that off for several years and while her husband worked long hours as a researcher at a genetics lab, she made a home for their family that kept growing.  Last year, she bid on a job and won.  This was her first big job after three small ones.  She was running the show and was active on the site.  The scaffolding simply hadn’t held.  No one was taking responsibility for the rigging and the company’s insurance wasn’t asking the questions they should.  Everything had been perfect for eleven years and now there she was in that bed, breathing in and out, that steady breathing he’d heard night after night for over a decade.  Something was wrong with the world.

Henry slipped out of the room and allowed them to be alone for a few more minutes before Mr. Ogebe returned to work.  Dr. McPherson walked a few steps down the hall and turned into the next room where the patient lay unmoving in bed.

Stephanie looked at her list with three columns.  One column labeled Mom, the middle one labeled, Tina, and the final one said Bette.  Under each name, was a list of about thirty items.  She was nearing the end and most items had been crossed out with one, measured line.  Another sheet of paper had only Henry’s name with about fifteen items under it.  She had only crossed out seven or eight items on his list.  She looked at the time and wondered if the mail had come yet.  She grabbed her stack and ran through the house to the front and out the door.  She saw the mail truck up ahead and ran two houses up the hill to it.  “Hi, I have some more,” she greeted the postal worker.

    1. i am once again left speechless at your incredible ability to weave a tale. i actually yelped in excitement when Angie was safe but at the same time, believe it or not, felt somewhat sorry for Josh. only your writing could evoke that somewhat schizophrenic sympathy.I’m also a bit worried at the introduction of Jodi into the story but hope that after all that we’ve been through with Bette and Tina to date, she will not pose a threat to their relationship.as for all of the other characters and their stories, i am finding them entertaining and interesting as well which is not usually the case when reading as i’m pretty much just a Tina/Bette fan. this again, is testimony to your ability to ability to entertain.thanks again for the story and the time and effort that must be involved. looking forward as always to reading more.

    2. I’ve spent the past two days reading the whole thing, and honestly? It’s great. Really, really great. The characters are well written and adhere to canon, your reweaving of the events of Season 3 into this alternative version is not only really well done, but in my mind — preferable. As for the Jodi issue, if she’s like every other non-core character in your work (herself, but changed), I’ll be very happy to see where that goes. I do wonder, though, moments after Bette is reunited with Tina and her baby for the first time in weeks, she wanders off to talk to Jodi? That seems a little… I don’t know, inhuman? But, hey, if that’s my only complaint in 26 chapters, consider it an amazing feat. I’m a huge Danish fan, and I’m happy to see you keeping the love alive. Would love to see more of that relationship in your writing, but generally I think the chapters are fairly good about being even with their time. You’re prolific. Are you really spitting out this much in three days? Because if so, that’s incredible. I mean, really, really exceptional. Thanks for writing this, it’s a great read, and I can’t wait to see more of it.

    3. Thank goodness Angelica is safe. I’m glad Boden was there. Um, not too excited about Jodi showing up in this story :). Can’t wait for the celebration…hope everyone gets a little ‘private celebration’ time . You’ve really spoiled us this last week Portia. Thanks for this wonderful fic and don’t be gone too long :)

    4. Bette better mess up of jodi!! yeah for angie being okay… now it’s time for the port-kennards to get on with their lives. tina needs to finish her rehab.i wonder what else steph. did what else is she hiding??? great update!!:)

    5. Ahhhh… I can breathe now. That was tense, but Baby A is safe, finally! I’m so glad there was a third person there and Boden clocked that whining maggot Josh. Although, I think Bette would have ripped him apart eventually anyway. Hels is leaving, which is a shame, but her heart’s somewhere else… So! Ol’ Steph’s about to get her comeuppance, big time. I hope Peter gets his money back, as well as his furniture. I’m dreading the stuff coming out that was on that list of hers. Girl needs help, if she can survive prison. This was so good, I can’t wait for the next post. thanks Portia.
