Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter 26C
“You drove all the way to Big Bear and didn’t stay?”
“Yeah, that was weird, but he was really fine about it. He wasn’t creepy or anything. Just like he changed his mind. We listened to music and sang all the way back. It was fun. I’m tellin’ you Josh is a nice guy. He got a raw deal with Dr. McFee.”
“Do you recall the name of the camp?”
“More than that.” Ju-Ju bent down and retrieved a large notebook from the shelf under her desk. I take loads of photos. I’ve taken like three Photography classes at UCLA Extension. I keep them here. I like to look at ‘em when things are slow.” She placed the black photo album on the counter, facing the group. “I know people think, oh, she’s always got her camera cause she’s Asian, but that’s not even it. I’m not Japanese. I’m Korean-American, okay?” She flipped it open and turned about ten pages at once, then turned a few more. “There it is.”

Dr. McPherson was visiting a patient and her family. The patient, a thirty-two year old construction worker had taken a fall from scaffolding at a job site on Wilshire Boulevard. She had fallen three stories. The prognosis was good for a long life, however, the brain trauma was extensive. He’d told his patient’s husband ten times, but he refused to believe it. The husband and father visited the Center every afternoon for an hour, his lunch hour, and then he’d come back at dinner time with their four young children.
“Mr. Ogebe, I don’t know what to tell you. I know how hard this is for you. The counselor’s talked to you about an extended care facility for your wife?”
“I don’t want to hear about that,” he said clearly in a baritone that was rich and Nigerian. “This is not an option for our family. You must do what you can. It is imperative.”
“We can’t do anything for her. We can’t make her brain better.”
“This is because she’s married to a Nigerian. You won’t help her because I’m African.”
Dr. McPherson shook his head. He didn’t argue with the man. Survivors often found all sorts of motivation to lambaste, chew out, and blame the first person they saw at the Center and it was often either McPherson or Frazier-Jones. This came as no surprise. “Well, I’ll call my Embassy. You need to help her. She’s an American.”

i am once again left speechless at your incredible ability to weave a tale. i actually yelped in excitement when Angie was safe but at the same time, believe it or not, felt somewhat sorry for Josh. only your writing could evoke that somewhat schizophrenic sympathy.I’m also a bit worried at the introduction of Jodi into the story but hope that after all that we’ve been through with Bette and Tina to date, she will not pose a threat to their relationship.as for all of the other characters and their stories, i am finding them entertaining and interesting as well which is not usually the case when reading as i’m pretty much just a Tina/Bette fan. this again, is testimony to your ability to ability to entertain.thanks again for the story and the time and effort that must be involved. looking forward as always to reading more.
WOW. you put so much into this everyone was weitten about. Could have done without Jodie tho. thanks
I’ve spent the past two days reading the whole thing, and honestly? It’s great. Really, really great. The characters are well written and adhere to canon, your reweaving of the events of Season 3 into this alternative version is not only really well done, but in my mind — preferable. As for the Jodi issue, if she’s like every other non-core character in your work (herself, but changed), I’ll be very happy to see where that goes. I do wonder, though, moments after Bette is reunited with Tina and her baby for the first time in weeks, she wanders off to talk to Jodi? That seems a little… I don’t know, inhuman? But, hey, if that’s my only complaint in 26 chapters, consider it an amazing feat. I’m a huge Danish fan, and I’m happy to see you keeping the love alive. Would love to see more of that relationship in your writing, but generally I think the chapters are fairly good about being even with their time. You’re prolific. Are you really spitting out this much in three days? Because if so, that’s incredible. I mean, really, really exceptional. Thanks for writing this, it’s a great read, and I can’t wait to see more of it.
more sharmeeeeeen!!! pleasee!!..excellent chap, so glad angie’s ok, hope you post soon
Thank goodness Angelica is safe. I’m glad Boden was there. Um, not too excited about Jodi showing up in this story :). Can’t wait for the celebration…hope everyone gets a little ‘private celebration’ time . You’ve really spoiled us this last week Portia. Thanks for this wonderful fic and don’t be gone too long :)
Nice way to weave Jodi and Big Bear into the story – and loved that Bette denied ‘gush’ing. Great stuff, Portia.
Bette better mess up of jodi!! yeah for angie being okay… now it’s time for the port-kennards to get on with their lives. tina needs to finish her rehab.i wonder what else steph. did what else is she hiding??? great update!!:)
Ahhhh… I can breathe now. That was tense, but Baby A is safe, finally! I’m so glad there was a third person there and Boden clocked that whining maggot Josh. Although, I think Bette would have ripped him apart eventually anyway. Hels is leaving, which is a shame, but her heart’s somewhere else… So! Ol’ Steph’s about to get her comeuppance, big time. I hope Peter gets his money back, as well as his furniture. I’m dreading the stuff coming out that was on that list of hers. Girl needs help, if she can survive prison. This was so good, I can’t wait for the next post. thanks Portia.
glad angie is ok…can’t wait for shane to get home and face the wrath of carmen…things need to change
