    In The Aftermath of Betrayal

“Shane,” Alice said softly, moving to place a gentle hand on her friends arm. Shane was quick to step away from the touch as she fought the sting of tears in her eyes. She wasn’t going to loose Jenny now, not after everything else that they had survived through together.

In a flash, Shane was struck with the memory of what had happened the last time Jenny was so upset. The sharp red blood on the solid white tile was the damaging image that stained her brain.

“No,” She said again, suddenly panicked. “No, Alice, I’ve got to find her.” Shane looked at her friend. “Have you seen her?”

Alice sighed and her gaze on Shane softened when she spotted the tears glistening in her eyes. “Try your house.” She suggested. “We offered her a ride, but Jenny refused, saying that she wanted to walk.”

Relief washed over Shane’s face and she smiled her thanks to Alice before racing to her jeep. She hadn’t had much more to waste. She had to find Jenny fast and make her understand. She feared leaving Jenny with too much time to herself while she was this upset, especially considering her previous track record.

Jenny stared, unblinking, toward the tiny blade on the table that beckoned to her. She hadn’t wanted to go back down that road again, but the need to feel anything, even pain, was becoming more and more welcomed as the time passed on.

She leaned forward ever so softly and grasped the shiny piece of metal that glowed even in the dark between her thumb and index finger. She ran another finger over the sharp edge of the fresh blade. It seemed to call louder to her after that.

Jenny thought back to the time when Shane had caught her cutting in their bathroom, and how even then, it was hard for her to feel the inflicted pain that the blade on her skin should have caused. Her tears then were the product of other reasons rather than from the pain of the cuts.

Still, she wanted nothing more than to the feel the fresh blade slice her with ease and to see the blood as it seeped from her wounds. She would never be able to explain to anyone why cutting appealed to her. The satisfaction that she had gotten from it was only minimal. Yet, the need to cut was becoming like a mindless chant pounding in her ears.
