    Author Notes:

    …Both women looked at their server with gratitude. There would be no more conversation. They would eat, take a cab back to the hotel, and Bette would go home alone and Tina would fly out in the morning, and everything would return to normal.

     

    By the time the two women made it to the restaurant they were comfortably laughing about Alice and the days’ events.  The hostess ushered them into the dimly lit restaurant and chose a romantic corner table by the windows.  Bette was pleased with herself, for the restaurant was even more wonderful than she had hoped.  After ordering a bottle of wine and their dinner choices, the two women admired one another from across the candle-lit table.

     

    "I cannot believe I’m actually sitting here with you," Tina smiled over her glass of wine, "Today was wonderful, and I was just so thrilled that I got to see you, I couldn’t even have imagined that you would have wanted to go to dinner.  It was a pleasant surprise."

     

    "For me, too," Bette confirmed.  "I…well, it had been so long since we last saw each other.  I couldn’t imagine seeing you only for a few moments."  Bette looked down at her glass then shyly met Tina’s gaze, "You really are quite beautiful, Tina.  You haven’t changed at all."

     

    "Oh please don’t say that."

     

    "Say what?"  Bette startled.

     

    "Say that I haven’t changed.  I was hideous in high-school.  Ugh.  The braces and the bad skin, and oh my god was I heavy back then."  Tina rolled her eyes and laughed.

     

    "I think hideous is a dramatic over-statement.  Physically, well, you’re a woman now so of course you’ve changed there," Bette blushed, "But, I mean, I look at you and still see the same Tina – same eyes, same smile."

     

    Tina didn’t know quite what to say, Bette was being so sweet, but references to their shared past presented a concern.  She didn’t want Bette to see her as a former student; she wanted Bette to see her as a future partner,

     

    "You haven’t changed at all, you know.  Still beautiful, stunning actually," Tina locked eyes with Bette, "The last few years have been amazing, you know?  Busy and exciting, and very, very lonely.  I always thought back on my time at Hudson so fondly, and I often thought of you."

     

    "Me?"

     

    "I know we lost touch after I graduated college, but your letters were always so wonderful. They…"  Bette stared at her with such intensity, Tina could hardly speak, "they reminded me of how much faith you had in me, continued to have in me during those years…"

    19. God, you made the tension quite palpable here, I’m amazed ! The way you pictured how mutual insecurities and secret attraction brang our dearest two in a quite unbearable situation was simply brilliant. This chapter is as powerful as a mute cry – heartbreaking, electric and so full of love… But finally, finally !, Tina is the one to break the wall of silence : what a relief ! And now, my goodness, what a wait until your next chapter – quite unbearable too !! Thank you SO much for this marvellous story. I – adore – it – more than ever. ^_^
