“Mommy?”
Bette and Tina were all ears as the little girl continued.
“Why does Santa live forever?” She reached again for the coffee, but this time Bette pulled it away to her side of the table, smiling at the strangely insightful question. “Is he always a old man?”
Tina turned to see Angelica with her hands clasped on the table, looking serious as ever, and she couldn’t help but let a breath of laughter escape. “Santa’s an old man, you mean?”
“Yeah,” Angelica continued, reasoning with her parents. “Santa’s an old man, but he never gets bigger.” She made an adorable gesture with her arms, holding them straight up, as she had no way of physically describing age. “He’s just always big and he’s never gone. Is he gonna be delivering presents for all of every Christmas?”
Bette had to smile at Angelica’s intelligence – her question was intriguing. Thankfully by then, she knew not to come out with the truth. Had her little girl introducing the concept of immortality at the age of three? She was speechless.
“Well why don’t we ask him one of these days,” Tina smiled, bringing over Angelica’s Cheerios, the milk, and her bowl. “I’m not sure either, but maybe one day, he’ll tell us both.” Just as she gently touched Angelica’s nose, Bette sat in surprise – that was a perfect out for a difficult question. She was impressed, and speechless once more. Tina was incredible with kids, and she loved that about her.
“Are you excited for Christmas, sweetie?” Bette asked with a smile, taking another big sip of her coffee when Tina came walking over and shook her head.
“You thief,” she teased quietly, taking her coffee back and bringing it to the counter so she could make something to eat.
“I’m this excited,” Angelica beamed, holding her arms out from side to side, as far as they would reach. “Really really really really really really really-“
“Alright,” Bette chuckled, shrugging her shoulders in defeat, “I give!”
Angelica relented, obviously happy with herself before she poured her cereal; she was so mature for her age. “I loves Christmas.” And then there were those baby sweet moments.
“You loves Christmas?” Bette asked back, actually enjoying the little girl’s slip-up. “Me too, baby. Me too.”
