Bette and Tina were drinking coffee at the table early the next morning, smiling at one another lovingly. As Bette thought back to the all-nighter they had pulled together just talking, she gazed with affection at Tina over the top of her mug. It wasn’t long before they heard Angelica making her way down the hall, her footsteps pausing at the doorway to their room. It was obvious she had stepped inside to come wake them like any other morning. They were never up by themselves that early.
“Mommy?”
Tina chuckled into her cup, imagining the confusion on the poor girl’s face before shouting out to her. “We’re in here, hunny.”
Angelica peeked her head around the corner to look at her mothers with some confusion. “Is it Christmas?”
Tina smiled and invited Angelica over with two open arms. “No, hunny. Christmas is soon. Mommy and I are only up because we had a really good sleep yesterday. Come here baby.”
Bette smirked at the lie and shook her head for a moment before she realized that Tina was right – Christmas was in only a few days. She knew because Alice complained every year how close her birthday was to Christmas, and that nobody should dare get her a combined gift for both. She chuckled to herself at the thought before Angelica’s voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Can I has some?” Angelica asked, sitting properly in Tina’s lap as she reached for the coffee mug on the table.
Tina couldn’t help but laugh, pushing it out of the girl’s reach. “No, hunny. That’s coffee, and it’s only for grown ups. Maybe when you’re older.”
“Maybe I can ask Santa for that.”
Bette had to shake her head again, taking another sip of the strong dose of caffeine. Although it was Saturday, she would need it to function until she could get some much-needed rest. “You’re gonna ask Santa to be older?”
“No, for coffee,” Angelica insisted in her adorably stubborn way.
“Yup, this is our child,” Tina chuckled, smoothing one hand over Angelica’s curly hair as she leaned back, looking out to Bette. They shared another moment between them before she pulled herself up and let Angelica have her seat. “Well, time for breakfast, hmm?”
