    Driving — Chapter 20

Bette was walking through town trying to distract herself from thinking about whether or not her letter had arrived yet and what Tinas response would be. She stopped at the corner and checked her watch. 10:17. Her thoughts were scattered, Guaranteed delivery by 10 am, so it must be there, but what if Tinas not there? What if she went out all day? What if she went back to LA? *****. Would she have gone home? I just talked to her yesterday. Where was she though? *****. Bette crossed the street. She took out her phone and dialed.
    Hello?
Alice, its Bette. Is Tina still at her mothers house?
Um good morning to you too.
Bette rolled her eyes. Sorry Do you know where she is?
Unless she drove here overnight, shes still there. Why?
    Becauseits important.
Ah Alice had spoken to Kit the day before and knew that Bette had ended the affair with Candace and then left for a vacation somewhere. Where are you?
    What do mean?
I mean I havent seen you, no ones seen you. Well, maybe Candace has, but I havent asked her.
Bette exhaled sharply. ***** off Alice.
Oh, I think youre doing enough of that for both of us.
You dont know what the ***** youre talking about – its over with her.
Oh. Have you talked to Tina?
As a matter of fact, yes.
Good, Alice paused for dramatic effect. cause I heard shes been getting some attention out there in the desert.
    Bettes face contorted in bewilderment.
    What?
Yeah, the neighbors hot for her *****. Alice smiled slightly, pleased with her choice of words.
Bette was shaking her head. What?! What neighbor? Bette had been to Diane Kennards house twice in seven years and she was now racking her brain to remember anything about the neighbors.
All I know is what Tina told me: the artist chick next door made a pass at her the other night.
Bette could feel the heat rising in her cheeks. Thats crazy. Thats ***** crazy. Shes been there what? A week? Alice I swear if youre lying to me
    Bette, Tina told me herself.
What else did she tell you?
That she had a fight with her mother.
Bette was frustrated. No, I mean about the neighbor.
Oh, thats about all I know. Alice wondered if omitting information was the same as lying.
*****. I have to go, Bette said abruptly.
Wait, where are you? Alice said, but it was too late, Bette had hung up.

    1. What a relief. Thank you for your decided lack of contrived plot twists and artificial drama. I love how you manage to do so much with honest emotion, believable relationships, and plausible dialogue. It’s much appreciated

    2. I have deposited a cheque in your name in the amount of one million dollars with Fleet Bank, Boston, so that you can write with no distractions.
      Now, please, continue!!!

    3. Hooray – on so many counts! Hooray for Bette’s wonderful letter and her willingness to lay herself and her heart on the line. Hooray for Tina to be willing to read it and allow Bette’s words to reach her heart. Hooray for Tina for making the call and being willing to go to Bette. Hooray, too, that Tina had enough spine to lay out conditions for the visit; it’s always better for expectations to be clear in advance. Hooray for the high quality of your writing, it’s so well done and readable, the story so engaging. And most of all, Hooray for you for posting. I’ve been waiting, and waiting, and waiting. But you make it worth my while. Keep up the wonderful work. Thank you!
