    Driving — Chapter 21

Tina backed up her car and pulled out onto the road. She saw Mary standing in her corral. Damn, she thought. She had hoped to avoid her, but there she was. Tina could just drive by and wave and leave it at that. *****, I dont want this hanging over my head. She steered the car toward Marys fence and slowly brought it to a stop.
Mary was standing near the fence holding a saddle when she got out of the car. Tina was pleased that the fence was between them; it would make this conversation easier.
    Hi, Tina said.
Hi, Mary answered. She had a slight smile on her face, but her eyes gave a look of uncertainty.
I got your note, Tina mimicked the opening and closing of the pop-up card Mary had made. Impressive.
Mary smiled broader. Art school. She threw the saddle onto the horses back.
Tina looked at the ground, then back up toward Mary who had bent under the horse to grab a strap.
Mary, um, Im not ready to be involved with someone.
Mary glanced at her and then threaded the strap through a metal ring and cinched it tight. She turned to face Tina.
Neither am I. Im just looking for some company.
Well, Im not good company right now, I
Mary interrupted, I wouldnt say that. Ive enjoyed all the time weve spent together.
Tina sighed. Shes not making this easy, she thought.
The other night I had too much to drink and Tina said.
And I shouldnt have kissed you. Agreed.
    Tina nodded.
Mary took the bridle off the fence post. I apologize for my actions Tina, but not my attraction to you. I cant help that. She turned toward the horse.
Tina blushed and waved her hand in the air as if she were pushing something away.
Um Im goin back to Taos. Bettes there and were going to talk.
Mary stopped trying to get the bit into the horses mouth. Oh?
    Yeah.
    Then I wish you well.
Tina smiled a little and shrugged. Thanks.
    Will you be back?
    Im not sure.
Mary was holding the bridle and looking at a spot on the ground. She looked up at Tina. Im glad I got to meet you, and I hope I see you again.
Thanks, it was nice to meet you too, Mary
They stood in awkward silence for a moment.
I should get going. Tina starts to back toward the car and waves, Bye.
Mary waves and watches Tina turn and walk to her car and get in. When the car reaches the end of the road and is out of her sight, she turns and pats the horse on the neck. Win some, lose some.

    1. In the moment of Bette seeing Tina, I wondered, “How could she ever cheat on her?”
The love felt very real. And the bewilderment.
I’m glad Tina closed things with Mary. Tina’s journey has a sense of realistic tentativeness – will they or won’t they? It’s certainly not a done deal.
      Thanks for posting another chapter.

    2. Hello, Massmom.
Had a little spare time tonight so I was using it to catch up on the board.
I enjoyed this very drawing of conclusion of a chapter.
I enjoyed it very much and like the others before me, we are crossing our fingers and hoping?

    3. I love what you’re doing here…it speaks to my heart. They have the fight of their lives at hand…but when you’re fighting for love, it’s so worth it.
