    Driving — Chapter 19

Tina was just turning into the road at the end of her morning run as the mail delivery truck was coming out. When she reached the front door of the house she saw the express mail envelope there. She picked it up and was surprised to see her name. She glanced quickly at the return address: Bette Porter. What is this? she thought as she hastily unlocked the door. A hundred thoughts ran rapidly through her head of what Bette might be sending – money? papers to sign? what? She sat on the edge of the couch and ripped open the outer envelope. Inside was another envelope with her name and address written in Bettes familiar script. Tinas stomach tightened a little in anticipation. She opened the envelope, took out the letter and began to read. She skimmed the first paragraph to determine the intent of Bettes letter.

    Dear T,
There was a morning about two years ago when I picked you up at the airport after one of your last business trips to New York. You were hungry and we stopped for breakfast on the way home. We sat by the window. You were wearing a black t-shirt that was a little rumpled from the plane. Your hair was tousled slightly and your eyes were tired. Yet, when I looked across the table the light from the window was shining on you and you never looked more beautiful. I didnt hear what you were saying. I couldnt speak. You were a Vermeer portrait there before me.

Tinas mouth had fallen open by the last line. She went back and read the paragraph again, slower this time, then she went on.

In that instant I could not believe that you loved me. I could not imagine what I had done in my life to deserve the honor of loving you. When you asked me what I was thinking, all I could answer was, I missed you. You took my hand and all the golden light inside of you flowed between us.
I lived a perfect moment that day and I have never forgotten it.
