Coming up for air – part eight

Sunday came for both Tina and Bette. Bette was giving her first Sunday dinner without Tina. Sunday dinners used to be Tina’s thing. A couple of times a month she would spend the entire day cooking, filling up the house with strange and enticing smells, and at night their friends and family would join them for a feast. Bette used to whine about it, saying that she wanted Tina for herself but secretly she loved the smells, being asked to taste this and that, listening to Tina’s quiet recitation of recipes. And she loved hanging out with their friends. Tina knew this of course. She would look at Bette with mischief in her eyes when she pulled Tina close whispering in her ear, what she would have done to her had they had the night to themselves.

Bette was sitting by the pool. She replayed in her mind all those times that her tempting Tina, had made her abandon whatever she was cooking to drag Bette into the bedroom. On much more than one occasion their guests had been served a dinner burned beyond recognition because Bette and Tina had been attending to more urging matters than cooking. Bette laughed out loud at the memory, feeling a rush of need and excitement run through her body. She rose to clean up the house before she had to go get the food she ordered at her favorite Thai restaurant. She was still smiling when she drove off to pick up dinner.

“Tina, you do remember that we’re going to my parents house tonight?” Henry yelled from the living room.
Tina was trying to finish a grant application that she needed to get out of the way before Monday morning.
“What…?” she yelled back without taking her eyes off the laptop.
“My parents… dinner… tonight. You didn’t forget, did you?” Henry asked leaning against the doorframe. Tina was lying on her stomach on the king-sized bed with her laptop in front of her. She looked up at the sound of his voice so close by. The far off expression on her face told Henry that she hadn’t heard a word he said.
“Tina, we’re going to my parents tonight. You need to get ready if we’re going to get there on time.”
“I thought we were staying in tonight. I have to work, Henry…”
“I told you about it last week.”
“Did you ask me to go or did you tell me to?”
“Oh Tina, let’s not get into this again…” Henry said with a tired expression on his face.
“I tend to listen harder when I’m asked…” Tina said looking at her boyfriend over the top of the screen.
“Can’t you just go get ready? I don’t want to be late…” he said trying to stay calm.
“Well, then you better leave right away… cause I have work to do…” she said and looked down at the screen again.
“God! I hate it when you’re like this… so cold and morose. OK… so I didn’t ask you – but couldn’t you just bear with me and come to my parents anyway?”
“Henry, I hate it when you just assume that I will go where ever you go. It’s not who I am… and I won’t just bear with you and go anyway… like I said, I’ve got work,” she said this time louder.
“Fine! I’ll go alone…” Henry yelled before he walked away. He had come to dread the weeks when Mikey was at his mother’s house. Tina’s demeanor seemed to change whenever his son left the house leaving him with a grumpy girlfriend.

    1. All most makes me ill to think of wasted love. That is what is happing to those two. Tina shouldnt still be angry with Bette because of Candace, she should be glad that Bette even talks to her. After leaving Bette her action was up to par Nor living with someone because she loves his child.and not him////// Thanks for posting thanks PPS

    2. WOW… but i have a few more words today… i love how they both know what the other is doing… even if they don’t know it themselves… i am so glad bette got up to take a look… and now i hope the healing begins… and they remember they were the best of friends first and then lovers… thanks.. and please post soon

    3. There’s so much potential for them… and given the circumstances (hot women in wet clothes that simply MUST come off), I think there are possibilities… ;) Sorry. They should talk. Or something. But this is a definite step for them.

    4. Tina finally made her way to what use to be her home, cold wet and scared out of her mind. Bette did the right thing by going to her and trying to calm her. Maybe now they can start to put some of the pain behind them.

    5. she was cold ans wet and just plain scared.(Rocky Horror, sorry) That was another awesome chapter. Levity or not – still going on the ride. Thanks for takin the time.

    6. Just caught up with your story – and it is AWESOME. So full of emotion and I love that both of them are having to get honest with themselves in order to find their way back.. Very very sweet and yet there’s an aching vulnerability to how they let it all fall apart. Thanks so much for sharing your writing with us.

    7. I love this story…Henry’s days are numbered. I thought Tina was going to see the cars and hear the laughter and leave cause she didn’t want to face her friends. I wonder how long it will take Bette to clear the room cause Tina is probably not gonna want to talk to everyone right now. They belong together they need to REALLY talk…this can be fixed…fix it anker.

    8. These two are so connected, it just sad that they don’t realize how much they need each other. I think Tina is at a point where her heart is hurting so bad, that she just needed to see Bette. I’m so glad Bette found her outside and brought her in. Hopefully, she will stay for dinner and be with her friends. Let the healing begin!! LOL! PPS.

    9. well done to Tina she had the courage to go to see Bette, and Bette is so sweet she told her T! i hope this will help her to start the reconcilation process
