Coming up for air – part eight

Coming up for air – part eight

Kit had been watching the interaction between Bette and Tina. After Tina left The Planet Bette had slumped back down in her chair. Kit could see al kinds of different emotions cross over Bette’s face as she stared down at the table. Kit went to her sister. She let her hand run through Bette’s soft curls to wake her up from her daze.
“Hey…” Bette said with an exhausted sigh.
“Hey baby girl… I don’t want to interrupt you, but you are still double-parked outside and it’s stirring up quite the commotion. Do you want me to move your car?”
Bette tore herself away from going over the conversation with Tina in her mind and got up.
“No, I’m leaving anyway… “ Bette looked at Kit with wonder in her eyes, “I think she just told me wait for her… well no, she didn’t. I told her that I would wait and she didn’t ask me not to….”
“So there’s hope?” Kit smiled and pulled Bette into her arms.
“…Yeah, hope…” Bette mumbled with her face buried in the crook of Kit’s neck.
Bette extracted herself and smiled at Kit. “Well, I’m off… see you tomorrow – Sunday dinner at my place…”
    Kit smiled, “I wouldn’t miss it…”

The conversation with Tina played over and over in her mind on the drive home and it continued to rotate like a broken record when she arrived at the house. She went for a run to exhaust herself further. She had managed to exercise four times over the past week and she hadn’t had a drop of alcohol since she threw up all over the couch last weekend. She felt better physically but her mind was in overdrive. What did it mean, when Tina thanked her before she left? What did it mean, when she acted all compassionate, when Bette was bleeding? What did it mean, when she said she didn’t know? What did it mean, when Tina didn’t refuse Bette’s offer to wait? The questions kept coming. Bette felt as if her mind was going to explode with uncertainty.

Bette knew she was no good at this. She had always resented self-absorbed behavior, never had been one to over-analyze her relationships. One thing she did know – Tina wasn’t happy. When she looked into those hazel eyes that never failed to stir something deep inside her, she saw that Tina carried around the same doubt and misery that Bette did. On her darker days this information may had given Bette some kind of satisfaction. At least that left the possibility of Tina returning to what, in Bette’s mind, would always be her home. But today the knowledge of Tina unhappiness only made her crave her presence even more. She missed being the one that Tina came to when she was sad. She missed being able to comfort Tina, to hold her tight feeling the anguish leave her body. She missed being strong, in control, being proactive. The Bette she used to be was all those things. Bette reminded herself that it was the old Bette who slept with Candace and lost Tina. Ok, so the new and improved version of Bette would be patient, reflexive, and attentive, she told herself. As she finished her jog, she silently prayed that she had the potential for that kind of change.

    1. All most makes me ill to think of wasted love. That is what is happing to those two. Tina shouldnt still be angry with Bette because of Candace, she should be glad that Bette even talks to her. After leaving Bette her action was up to par Nor living with someone because she loves his child.and not him////// Thanks for posting thanks PPS

    2. WOW… but i have a few more words today… i love how they both know what the other is doing… even if they don’t know it themselves… i am so glad bette got up to take a look… and now i hope the healing begins… and they remember they were the best of friends first and then lovers… thanks.. and please post soon

    3. There’s so much potential for them… and given the circumstances (hot women in wet clothes that simply MUST come off), I think there are possibilities… ;) Sorry. They should talk. Or something. But this is a definite step for them.

    4. Tina finally made her way to what use to be her home, cold wet and scared out of her mind. Bette did the right thing by going to her and trying to calm her. Maybe now they can start to put some of the pain behind them.

    5. she was cold ans wet and just plain scared.(Rocky Horror, sorry) That was another awesome chapter. Levity or not – still going on the ride. Thanks for takin the time.

    6. Just caught up with your story – and it is AWESOME. So full of emotion and I love that both of them are having to get honest with themselves in order to find their way back.. Very very sweet and yet there’s an aching vulnerability to how they let it all fall apart. Thanks so much for sharing your writing with us.

    7. I love this story…Henry’s days are numbered. I thought Tina was going to see the cars and hear the laughter and leave cause she didn’t want to face her friends. I wonder how long it will take Bette to clear the room cause Tina is probably not gonna want to talk to everyone right now. They belong together they need to REALLY talk…this can be fixed…fix it anker.

    8. These two are so connected, it just sad that they don’t realize how much they need each other. I think Tina is at a point where her heart is hurting so bad, that she just needed to see Bette. I’m so glad Bette found her outside and brought her in. Hopefully, she will stay for dinner and be with her friends. Let the healing begin!! LOL! PPS.

    9. well done to Tina she had the courage to go to see Bette, and Bette is so sweet she told her T! i hope this will help her to start the reconcilation process
