Bitter Endings, Sweet Beginnings: Part Two
“Want to have a picnic?” asked Jenny, her eyes wide and guileless in their honest intent as she hefted up a huge wicker basket that appeared to be filled to the brim with food items.
“A picnic?” echoed Alice who moved aside to allow Jenny enter the apartment, creating a path of water with her as she went along. “You know it’s raining, right Jenny? I mean, you’re decked out in raingear. There’s no way you don’t.”
“Oh, I know,” Jenny chirped happily, setting the picnic basket down before taking off her rain coat and folding it neatly in a pile to then pull off her boots and place them on top of the coat. With this done, she bounced up to her full and fairly diminutive height and peered into Alice’s eyes. “We’re having an indoor picnic.”
“We are,” said Alice dimly, trailing after Jenny when the brunette picked up the picnic basket and headed into her kitchen. “Can I ask why we’re having an indoor picnic?”
“Because sometimes people need picnics,” murmured Jenny wisely, searching through her wicker basket. She looked up at Alice wore an impish grin. “Guess what I’ve got in my hand?”
Blinking in confusion and deciding that maybe it was best to just go with the flow, as Shane would say it, and simply accept Jenny was in her apartment wanting to have an indoor picnic instead of trying to comprehend the why of it. “Water logged ants?” asked Alice dryly.
“No,” Jenny pouted adorably. Then with much grace and flair, she produced a large wheel of cheese. “Cheese wheel!” Plunking the cheese wheel down on the table, Jenny stared at it and uttered solemnly, “A picnic isn’t complete without a cheese wheel.”
“Camembert cheese of France,” said Alice, reading the label on the clear yellow cheese. Looking at the table where Jenny had finished unpacking she saw their picnic pretty much consisted of the cheese wheel, some baguettes, and two bottles of wine. Maybe this random indoor picnic impulse Jenny had wasn’t such a bad thing after all. Alcohol was always a good in Alice’s opinion. At least lately, anyway. “What kind of wine did you get?”
“Beaujolais Superieur,” said Jenny absently. Done arranging their picnic, she wandered into the kitchen then reappeared with a corkscrew. Easily twisting the top off, Jenny paused to watch as it flew into the living room and hit a brown plant that was either dead or on the edge of death. “Nice distance,” she observed.

so ok – you were totally right – i loved dana’s pov and it totally makes sense and you just rock for the way you make me still love her even though she broke Alice’s heart.
And again, you were right, Jenny is the perfect friend for Alice and Helena and her ‘weirdness’ fits perfectly and is something endearing in this, not off putting as it is on the show.
And finally – the comfort that alice and helena find in their shared experiences, insecurities and needs was just perfect! Loved it – but then again, knew I would! Great job!!!
Bagpuss Rocks I and my friends were bought up on him. Best British kids tv show ever!! Bring bagpuss to the world!
Hey now… lol. I’ve got nothing against Bagpuss! The show was cool but I’m mildly freaked out by it. Then again, I’m mildly freaked out by lawn gnomes too. Brrr. Lawn gnomes. Anyway, Helena and Jenny like Bagpuss. They just find it somewhat disturbing, much like me. =P
You’re good.. you’re good. You actually MAKE me like Helena… ;)
Positively loving this, anyone who takes the time to properly write Helena *and* who writes her so damn well gets heaps of gold stars in my book. =) And I’m even picking up on the joys of Helacious =D Squeee
This is great! It’s nice seeing Helena portrayed as someone who does actually have a good side! I’m enjoying it very muchly
Thank You! For reasons in no particular order:
1. For writing Jenny in a way that isn’t about her “bad” weirdss. For actually writing her as someone who underneath all the complexities i still someone who can be kind, and defintely someone can see Alice having a friendsip with.
2. For Dana’s pov–I danish shipper at heart and will be, damn all season 3 spoilers and what not, and even though this is helacious story at heart, there are still those undercurrents of Danish, which will always be true for me, no matter what happens with them.
3. For writing helacious in such a way that even I, as a self proclaimed Danisher, can enjoy and even root for. I can only hope (perhaps foolishly)that the writers of TLW will do as much justice.
You are by far my favorite Fan Fic writer on this board–effortlessly weaving stories together that explore connection, love and all the good stuff in between.
I loved this and I’m a little upset that you got four stars considering some of the crap on this board that gets five stars. Dumb fuckers.
Anyway. I already told you what I liked, but I think my favourite parts were getting into Helena’s background and in her head, particularly with her father and the issues she has with her mother and the thing about her running. Ha! I always got lost running cross-country and as I told you, getting lost 13 times is nothing to me because I got lost a lot more times than that. People totally do get lost! And how cute was it that Helena was all fixated and upset that she placed fourth after going a mile and half out of her way? Priceless and so her because she would totally demand so much of herself even at age 15.
And ohh, that last part with the phone call and the dinner arrangements and everything? God.
You’re killing me with Helacious cuteness!
great as always
Not content with making us love Helacious, now you’re going to make me like Jenny! This is a great chapter. The insight into Dana: the scene where she watched Alice in the Planet was just painful. I loved the scene at the end when Alice called Helena. Great mix of tension and humour. And, finally, speaking as someone from the UK: don’t knock Bagpuss! (OK, it was weird, what can I say).
