Bitter Endings, Sweet Beginnings: Part Two

Knowing she made it worse, that her presence brought nothing but apprehension and unhappiness, Dana relied on their friends to watch over Alice for her. To help her and keep her safe. But it didn’t quite work out as Dana hoped. Bette and Tina were too preoccupied with the trials of being new parents along with Bette’s search for employment and Tina’s reentry into the workforce. And Shane? She was finally in an actual relationship that was turning out to the best thing to happen in her life thus far. Shane was head over heels in love and being well aware of what that felt like, Dana didn’t want to take that away from her. No, it was better to let Shane bask in the joy of her new relationship with Carmen.

Which left just one person and staring nervously at delicate features, shifting under the strangely intuitive and all knowing look in blue eyes, Dana wondered if she had made a grave mistake, asking this of her. While she was considered a friend by all in their group somehow an odd distance between her and the others remained. Perhaps because her personality or the simple fact that most of them didn’t quite understand her even on the smallest level. That being so, maybe she shouldn’t have come here, maybe she should be taking back her request.  But the moment Dana started to say this, those blue eyes reflected sincere care and concern and hands soft but somehow hard from constant typing held her own.

“It’s okay,” murmured Jenny, squeezing Dana’s hands in tender reassurance. “I understand, Dana. Believe me,” she chuckled with self deprecating humor. “I understand perfectly what it’s like to be bad for the person that you love and treasure the most in this world.”

“Just” Dana trailed off and swallowed deeply, squeezing her eyes tightly shut. When she opened them, she smiled weak and wan then said in a bare whisper, “Just watch over her for me. Please, Jenny, I need you to do that.”

“I will,” Jenny gave her hushed and solemn vow. “I promise.”

The last person Alice expected to see standing on her doorstep in the middle of a severe thunderstorm was Jenny but there she was. Dressed in a traditional yellow raincoat that had the hood up along with a pair of matching boots. A charming wisp of a smile on her face, Jenny pushed the hood down, causing raindrops to fall onto the floor of the building hallway.

    1. so ok – you were totally right – i loved dana’s pov and it totally makes sense and you just rock for the way you make me still love her even though she broke Alice’s heart.
And again, you were right, Jenny is the perfect friend for Alice and Helena and her ‘weirdness’ fits perfectly and is something endearing in this, not off putting as it is on the show.
And finally – the comfort that alice and helena find in their shared experiences, insecurities and needs was just perfect! Loved it – but then again, knew I would! Great job!!!

    2. Hey now… lol. I’ve got nothing against Bagpuss! The show was cool but I’m mildly freaked out by it. Then again, I’m mildly freaked out by lawn gnomes too. Brrr. Lawn gnomes. Anyway, Helena and Jenny like Bagpuss. They just find it somewhat disturbing, much like me. =P

    3. Positively loving this, anyone who takes the time to properly write Helena *and* who writes her so damn well gets heaps of gold stars in my book. =) And I’m even picking up on the joys of Helacious =D Squeee

    4. Thank You! For reasons in no particular order:
      1. For writing Jenny in a way that isn’t about her “bad” weirdss. For actually writing her as someone who underneath all the complexities i still someone who can be kind, and defintely someone can see Alice having a friendsip with.

      2. For Dana’s pov–I danish shipper at heart and will be, damn all season 3 spoilers and what not, and even though this is helacious story at heart, there are still those undercurrents of Danish, which will always be true for me, no matter what happens with them.

      3. For writing helacious in such a way that even I, as a self proclaimed Danisher, can enjoy and even root for. I can only hope (perhaps foolishly)that the writers of TLW will do as much justice.

You are by far my favorite Fan Fic writer on this board–effortlessly weaving stories together that explore connection, love and all the good stuff in between.

    5. I loved this and I’m a little upset that you got four stars considering some of the crap on this board that gets five stars. Dumb fuckers.

Anyway. I already told you what I liked, but I think my favourite parts were getting into Helena’s background and in her head, particularly with her father and the issues she has with her mother and the thing about her running. Ha! I always got lost running cross-country and as I told you, getting lost 13 times is nothing to me because I got lost a lot more times than that. People totally do get lost! And how cute was it that Helena was all fixated and upset that she placed fourth after going a mile and half out of her way? Priceless and so her because she would totally demand so much of herself even at age 15.

And ohh, that last part with the phone call and the dinner arrangements and everything? God.

You’re killing me with Helacious cuteness!

    6. Not content with making us love Helacious, now you’re going to make me like Jenny! This is a great chapter. The insight into Dana: the scene where she watched Alice in the Planet was just painful. I loved the scene at the end when Alice called Helena. Great mix of tension and humour. And, finally, speaking as someone from the UK: don’t knock Bagpuss! (OK, it was weird, what can I say).
