Becoming Dana Fairbanks Chapter 6
After a beat, they both said, “A scoop of each.”
Once settled with there ice cream at the kitchen table, Irwin asked again what was the cause of his girl’s late night thinking.
Dana decided to be honest, at least partially honest.
“College. Just wondering what it will be like? I mean it is like a new start right, I can be anyone I want…”
“And what’s wrong with who you are? You’re smart, talented, beautiful…”
“Dad you have to say that.”
“No, I don’t. I can be honest. Howard, as much as that boy sings..? It’s horrible!… not a lick of musical talent in that boy… see me being honest about my children.”
Sighing dramatically, “Your jokes are worse than mine. I thought I was the champion of lame jokes. I guess I’ll have to turn in my crown.”
“Seriously Dana, I know you said you want to forego taking a year off and start college next year, is that what you really want?”
“Yes, I know Coach Hall doesn’t agree, but I think he is wrong. The coaches at Stanford last week said if I was willing to work with them over next summer I would have a real shot of making first seat my freshman year. And the coaches at UCLA seem to think the same.”
“Do you know what you would want to study at school? Lord knows, I love watching you play and believe you have a long career ahead of you if you want it, but you need to have a back up plan in case you get injured or decide to do something else.”
“I was thinking business with a minor in accounting or something to that effect. I want to be in control of my career both on and off the court.”
And that was the truth. With every passing day Dana was longing to have more control of her life. This decision was the first step.
“Well, I support you,” the older Fairbanks declared standing up to clear the now empty bowls for the table.
“Yeah,” Dana questioned?
“Dana, all your mother and I want is for you to be happy. You are an intelligent young woman and have proven over and over again your maturity and dedication. If you want to start college early, then you will.”
“But mom agrees with coach…”
“Just leave your mother to me. No one can resist the old Fairbanks charm.”
Letting out a squeal of delight, Dana wrapped her dad in a grateful hug.
“You’re the best daddy.”
“I know,” then stepping back to look at his daughter he said, “When did you get so big? I remember when you were just a baby. Now we are talking about college and soon you’ll be off winning Wimbledon…”
“Dad that is a long way off…”
“No you’ll be so surprised how fast it’ll come. Soon Wimbledon, then after you conquered the tennis world you’ll find a nice young man and settle down. Have a few kids of your own, maybe with your brown eyes… time flies”
“Oh daddy,” Dana whispered pulling her dad into another hug, not knowing how to tell him the scenario he just talked about would never happen. So she just wouldn’t tell him. She could not break her dad’s heart.

Love the story but don’t Dana have blue eyes and not brown, Alice is the one with the brown eyes if I don’t remember wrong…. great update
D bumping into A was perfect as well as a supportive Irwin having ice cream with D. So glad to see D being so determined and wouldn’t allow others to alter the course she set. That’s our Dana! Good job, thank you anionayo for your speedy post right after your trip!
Dana is exactly what i’ve been looking for-clumsy and athletic to just fall right into me and spill my coffee! LoL Loved how well you showed her rambling, i love an uncoordinated Dana. Great job anionayo! Thanks for another great chapter
I hope your trip went well and I am glad to see you back. What a great start to the week! I’m very proud of Dana to proceed with her plan to skip the “off” year — especially since it aggravates her stupid coach. Love, love, love the Danish meeting and Dana’s internal monologue through the thing. “A scoop of each.” — Hee! I adore how you have written Irwin. Dana so needs one parent who is willing to listen. Dana just needs to realize it will take more than her sexuality to disappoint her father. Hmmmmmm… I think I need to start hanging out on college campuses and drinking coffee. Thanks so much for the most excellent chapter, anionayo!!
Hahahahah…… That was so funny Dane running into Alice. Yeah Dane is a big klutz. But that’s so lovely about Dana! So I see she fell for Alice. Awww….. the last part was so cute too. That she can never break her dad’s heart. I’m a daddy’s girl myself. ;) I totally understand Dana. But wheew, Dana must be a genius to go to Stanford or UCLA with a year skipping ahead, and all along with playing tennis? Awesome! I’m so excited what’s going to happen :) PPS
