Arthur left them both and walked into the room.
“Hey dad.” Spencer said nervously.
“Hey sweetie, I’m sorry you had to see that.” Arthur apologized as he walked to the other side of Ashley’s bed and watched her carefully. “How is she doing?” He asked.
Spencer joined him on that side and sighed. “No progress. It’s like she is there, but she still isn’t, you know?”
“Yeah, but I bet that if you stayed and talked to her, she might get better.” Arthur said as if Spencer was a little kid again. Spencer was a seventeen year old girl but she was buying it.
Spencer grabbed Ashley’s hand lightly and tried to fight back the tears. “Hey Ashley,” She began slowly. “You have to get better really soon okay? For Avery and Amanda and for me too, you have to be strong and get through this for yourself. We will be together again soon. I don’t know when exactly, but it doesn’t matter because you’re worth the wait.” Spencer could feel Ashley’s fingers slightly moving underneath her hand. It was a small amount of movement, but one that gave her hope.
Ben stood beside Paula a little bit down the hall and talked to her in a calm cool and collective manner. “Look, you have a lot of things at stake here. Your daughter wants you to love her and you keep pushing her away. And Arthur…” He drifted off into a silence full of meaning.
“What about him?” Paula pushed.
“I see the way you two are around each other. You didn’t want that divorce and neither did he. You both still love each other, you’re just too afraid to admit it.”
“My life was way too screwed up when I was with him. I don’t want to go back to that.”
“Your life was screwed up because you made it that way. Look, you go tell Arthur you love him, and then give Spencer a big hug. That will make everything right again. The way things were meant to be.” Ben explained. Paula stood slowly and began walking back towards the hospital room.
“I can’t, not when Spencer is like this.” Paula said.
