    Chapter Six: Better Left Unsaid

“Uh… Is this a bad time?” Inquired Ashley from the other side of the door, brows lifted as she shifted her weight from foot to foot.

Spencer’s mouth hung open for a moment longer as she inhaled as if to say something, but then thought better of it. Taking a step backwards, she moved to shut the door but was blocked by a stubborn hand reaching out to stop her.

“Hey! Come on, I just wanted to apologize!” She protested, using her strength to force the door open. Like hell she’d driven all the way here to have a door slammed in her face.

“Why? And how do you know where I live?” The blonde spoke, giving up on the struggle with the door and instead just crossing her arms.

Why? Ashley wasn’t even sure of that herself. After the funeral she’d just driven around in her car, feeling guiltier and guiltier as the image of Spencer’s quivering shoulders reappeared in her mind. As hard as it may be to believe, she had a conscience, and today it had gotten the best of her. “I… I felt bad about what I said… And I know where you live because I knew where she lived.”

“…Well, thanks. Bye now.” Spencer moved to shut the door, although she was blocked once more. She didn’t know what to make of this girl, and the confusion just made her want to turn and run. She was getting rather flighty these days.

“That’s it? You don’t have anything else to say?” She didn’t know what she expected, but “Thanks. Bye now.” certainly didn’t seem adequate.

An annoyed Spencer allowed the brunette to open the door once more, and she tossed her hands in the air, “What else do you want from me?”

“…I… I don’t know….” Ashley averted her eyes to the floor, staring at the welcome mat as she contemplated what to say. She expected some kind of verbal lashing from the blonde girl, a tirade of sorts. Maybe she even wanted one. Hell, if she got yelled at, then she would have a good reason to hate her, and this guilty feeling residing in her gut could finally dissipate.
