Finally On the Ground – (Chapter: La Traviata)
********************************************************************
Spencer readjusted the temperature settings for the last time and closed the vacuum seal. She tightened the door, and gave it one last yank for good luck. Stepping back and out of the way she called out,
“Give it a go Mick, I think we got it this time.” She held her breath for a few seconds as the boy behind the machine gave a grunt and pushed the power button. The machine whirled to life and the young lad made his way out from behind the machine.
“Do we have it?”
“Don’t know. Give it a minute.” She tried not to sound irritated. It wasn’t his fault and she wasn’t irritated with him. Just with the bloody machine which had been giving them nothing but trouble for months now. They waited, Spencer with her arms crossed, head cocked and bottom lip caught between her teeth. Mick hopped from one foot to the other, eyes darting between the machinery and Spencer. After two minutes, the blonde growled.
“Dammit.”
“Nothing?”, Mick sounded dismayed.
Spencer slapped a hand on the door she had just closed and shook her head. “Dead cold.” She threw her hands up in despair. “We’re just going to have to get the technicians in.”
“I didn’t just hear you say technicians did I?” The balding head of Thomas Astor stuck its head around the corner of the room Spencer and Mick were standing in, pulling Spencer away from the machine and earning the intruder a wry smile.
“Unfortunately yes.” Spencer shrugged. “This sterilizer is going nowhere fast Thom. And we can’t manage with two for very long.”
“They take forever” her boss wasn’t whining, but Spencer knew how much it annoyed him. “It’s like because we’re out in the boondocks of the solar system they treat us…”
“Like we’re in the boondocks?” Spencer laughed prettily. “Yup. But we get a better view.”
“It’s all space Spencer.” He took off his thinly rimmed spectacles and cleaned them on his white coat. A gesture that Spencer had seen repeated a million times. “Oh well. I’ll get Gladys to call them. You right for clinic?”
“Of course.” Spencer blew her hair out of her face and brushed her hands down her black pants. “Mick, you mind cleaning up?” The lad shook his face and went to busy himself behind the machine again.
Spencer moved gracefully out into the corridor and was surprised to find Thom still standing there. He looked a little expectant.
“We’re still on for tonight right?”
Why did he think she’d suddenly cancel. Now that he was unsure, Spencer was tempted to cancel just to be mean. But it wasn’t in her. She just wasn’t a mean person. “Of course Thom, I’ll see you at seven. I have to get to clinic though.” She checked her watch. “I’m already officially half and hour late. I hope my boss won’t be mad.” She grinned at him.
“I know it was in everyone’s best interests. I’ll even let you take extended lunch tomorrow.”
“Aw gee boss thanks.” She punched him playfully on the arm.
“I’ll see you tonight.” He winked at her, which looked ridiculous on him, and walked off.
Spencer blew out a puff of air and wondered again why she was dating him. Maybe because prospects around here were so spectacularly dim and she’d found her last boyfriend in bed with his best friend, Jack. Spencer kind of understood, even she thought Jack was cute but still….
At least Thom was unlikely to stray. Not that made Spencer feel any more excited about her date tonight. Shoving her hands in the pockets of her short, white coat she shrugged, and walked off to clinic.

I’m gonna be honest, I’m usually not a big fan of the whole outer space thing, but you’ve definitely got me intrigued with this one. Plus, I have loved everything else you’ve written, so I’m sure I’ll love this just as much.Post more soon!
Honestly, I have never watched Firefly and don’t really know any of the characters. HOWEVER, you could write about Spencer and Ashley in a…convent and I would read it. Your stories are awesome. Looking forward to your next update and especially the last Best For Me installment.
Spashley in a convent? Holy crap! Now there’s a fic idea!
Now that you mention it…two nuns finding love in a convent. Not bad at all!
i clicked over here hoping to see a new 28 days installment…but low and behold a brand new universe exists. what could be better than a clomle version of a joss whedon concept? nothing but…well, i’m the only one with a trevor…so for everyone else in the world the answer is just NOTHING. hurray for sez!
well there you go again…hooking me to another one of your ff’s. thanks alot clom….thanks alot…(said sarcastically of course) :)
this is going to be so interesting! i have not read firefly myself but i am very familiar. au’s that stretch beyond every day life for SON’s bunch are very exciting, and since you write camp stories that have me begging (28 days), i think you’ll pull this off beautifully. thank you!
Yay. A new story. I can tell I’m already to be loving it, but then again I love all of your stuff. :] I like where this is going. Woot. Even tho this story is a li’l different from the normal I KNOW it’ll be a good one. That’s just how you are. You make anything good and I’m already into the whole “Space Thing”. So I’m going to be waiting for the update. Love it. (and you, heh…)

oi oi! I didn’t actually see this posted on here – hence me reading it on the other board, thinking “errr, what!?” and then replying. The “err what!?” was more about me having not seen any mention of it anywhere so it came to my surprise that you’d not already berated me for not replying, as opposed to being about the story, cos I think the story’s cooooooool! But there is a reply out there – a proper one, unlike this one – that you should go read :-P Jxx
