Finally On the Ground – (Chapter: La Traviata)

It took only a minute or so to wend her way to the front of the ship. It was a small craft, barely big enough for four people to live on comfortably. It was large enough to afford reasonable travel opportunities and Ashley could just about manage to run it entirely on her own. Which was a damn good thing because she WAS entirely on her own. And that was just the way she liked it. She stripped off her overalls as she entered the cockpit, hanging them on the hook and settling comfortably into the captain’s chair. From the window, the stars of the cosmos twinkled back. Like the frosting on a cupcake.

Where had that thought come from? Ashley’s stomach grumbled understandingly and she realized that it had probably been a day since she’d eaten. Damn. Not that she had a lot of food left on board. In fact, with the various mechanical delays, breakdowns and complete lack of employment opportunities of late, she was positively limping. This gasket was going to hold for about two days max. And she knew it. Then, she was screwed. So, she needed to find an appropriate planet within 2 days range. One day would be better because that’s how much food she had left. Well, if she ate two meals and pretended that grit rations were food. Maybe she could eat the defunct gasket, it was no use any more. The explosion had made it irretrievable. Fantastic. Just another friendly gesture from the universe at large.

“Thanks a million” she yelled out the front window. It was no surprise that the universe didn’t reply. She blew her loose hair off her forehead and tapped some buttons. Scanning for appropriate planets she decided that the universe really must hate her. There was one. Oh great. This was going to be so much fun she could find herself wanting to tackle the ironing. Or possibly the ironing of the entire planet Wrinkle. Groaning she set the coordinates and put her hands on the steering column.

Right. Please work. Please. Count… one… two… three. Press button for go. The engine coughed, spluttered, and then blinked slowly but surely to life. Thank the lord almighty. Well, she could soon. Turning the wheel and setting the auto-pilot she let the ship steer itself towards Orlandio, a church planet.

    13. oi oi! I didn’t actually see this posted on here – hence me reading it on the other board, thinking “errr, what!?” and then replying. The “err what!?” was more about me having not seen any mention of it anywhere so it came to my surprise that you’d not already berated me for not replying, as opposed to being about the story, cos I think the story’s cooooooool! But there is a reply out there – a proper one, unlike this one – that you should go read :-P Jxx
