Finally On the Ground – (Chapter: La Traviata)

Red blinking lights heralded the problem before the whole gasket blew in her face. She’d been fast enough to notice but not fast enough to get her head completely out of the way, earning her a stinging graze and a burn along her cheek. The smell of sizzled hair permeated the room. Swearing profusely in every language she knew, Ashley swung down off the metal parapet she was balanced on and landed neatly on the gangplank. Throwing open the battered lid of a locker she flung aside various bits of misshapen metal until she found what she was looking for.

“Fuck” she swore, rocking back on her ankles. She grasped the lump of mechanics in her hand and stared at it. “Fuck.”

Placing the lump on the gang plank next to her she ferreted through the trunk once again, occasionally throwing epithets into the air around her and thrusting bits and pieces into the pockets of her serviceable brown waist coat. Clamping a roll of duct tape between her teeth she slammed closed the locker. Trusty adjustable spanner in one hand, and her initial bounty in the other, she clambered deftly back up the narrow metal ladder to the parapet and balanced precariously there for a second. Twisting in a half jump she landed in a sitting position, and carefully placed the bundle of machinery she’d retrieved in the cradle of her lap. The next ten minutes were spent carefully attaching what seemed to be random pieces of metal to various bits and finally, wrapping the whole thing bar one small hole at the end in a very large wad of duct tape. Shrugging from the heat and exertion she clambered to her feet and made her way over to the now very extinct gasket of her engine. Levering it out with the handle of her adjustable spanner she grabbed it and then dropped it, shaking her hand furiously at the heat of the metal,

“Putain de merde.” Kicking the now defunct part off the parapet onto the gangplank below she grumbled, blowing on her burn. “Fucking idiot.” She could only be talking to herself now. It took several more minutes to carefully manoeuvre the duct taped bundle, now a very makeshift gasket, into the slot required. With a sigh of relief when the macrocon shafts lined up, Ashley slammed home the lid of the compartment and wiped her oily hands on her handy stained rag. It looked well used; it was.

    1. I’m gonna be honest, I’m usually not a big fan of the whole outer space thing, but you’ve definitely got me intrigued with this one. Plus, I have loved everything else you’ve written, so I’m sure I’ll love this just as much.Post more soon!

    2. Honestly, I have never watched Firefly and don’t really know any of the characters. HOWEVER, you could write about Spencer and Ashley in a…convent and I would read it. Your stories are awesome. Looking forward to your next update and especially the last Best For Me installment.

    3. i clicked over here hoping to see a new 28 days installment…but low and behold a brand new universe exists. what could be better than a clomle version of a joss whedon concept? nothing but…well, i’m the only one with a trevor…so for everyone else in the world the answer is just NOTHING. hurray for sez!

    4. this is going to be so interesting! i have not read firefly myself but i am very familiar. au’s that stretch beyond every day life for SON’s bunch are very exciting, and since you write camp stories that have me begging (28 days), i think you’ll pull this off beautifully. thank you!

    5. Yay. A new story. I can tell I’m already to be loving it, but then again I love all of your stuff. :] I like where this is going. Woot. Even tho this story is a li’l different from the normal I KNOW it’ll be a good one. That’s just how you are. You make anything good and I’m already into the whole “Space Thing”. So I’m going to be waiting for the update. Love it. (and you, heh…)

    13. oi oi! I didn’t actually see this posted on here – hence me reading it on the other board, thinking “errr, what!?” and then replying. The “err what!?” was more about me having not seen any mention of it anywhere so it came to my surprise that you’d not already berated me for not replying, as opposed to being about the story, cos I think the story’s cooooooool! But there is a reply out there – a proper one, unlike this one – that you should go read :-P Jxx
