Ever the Same – (Chapter: Ch. 4: Tough it Up)

“Uh, yeah, sure, okay.” I smirk while scratching the back of my head.

He turns around, coffee in tow and looks at me suddenly confused. “Uh, Spence, you okay? It looks like you randomly started crying.”

I put up my hand to stop him, “No, no. Just choked, is all.” I suddenly notice my cell phone buzzing in my back pocket, so I pull it out and look at the screen saying that I have a text message. I flip it open reading, ‘Hey U! Outside ur house. Get a move on!’ I smile to myself, and then look back up at Dad. “I gotta go. Ride’s here.” I motion to the door over my shoulder with my thumb.

“Okay,” he walks back over to me and kisses me on the forehead. “Have a good day.”

“You too,” I say as I walk towards the door. Right when I’m about to walk out, he stops me.

“Hey, Spence,” I lift my eye brows to show that I’m listening, “you know, if there’s anything you want to talk about, I’m here.” He’s looking really sincere. I know I can talk to him, too. He’s not stupid; I know he can sense the little extra bounce in my step. I’ll still hold off in telling him. He may be the only one who might be cool about it.

“I know,” I nod and offer a sincere smile. “Same to you, Dad. You know you can tell me anything.”

He chuckles and shoos me out the door, but I know, deep down, he appreciates it greatly.

Spencer walked outside seeing Ashley waiting in her car. She smiled and walked around to the passenger side, opening the door, and getting in. When she got in, she turned to face Ashley and gasped. Ashley didn’t quite have on her happiest of faces, and to add to that, she had a band-aid under her right eye.

    "Uh, Ashley?"

"I fuckin’ hate that cat, Spence." Ashley said, narrowing her eyes at the blonde.

Spencer put her hand over her mouth to hide her smile, "What did you do to it?"

"Nothing! I was sleeping, and all the sudden the little bastard jumps on my face, turning it into a scratching post!"
