Ever the Same – (Chapter: Ch 2: Shake it Off)
“For Spencer? Why, you said you guys aren’t together.”
Okay, I lied, duh! “What’s it matter? It hurts her, Aid.” I’m tired of hurting her.
He simply nods in reply. I think I’ve managed to get through that think skull of his.
I groan softly as I look at the somewhat sad excuse for a high school jock. I mean, I know they’re supposed to be kinda whorish, but seriously. Madison? Ugh, gag me. I place my hand on his back and rub in a circular motion. I remember this always calmed him when he was stressed back when we were dating. "So, what do you plan to do with the walking STD?"
"I don’t know." He sits upright and I cease my hand motion on his back. "I can’t believe I got myself back into this."
"Right when you think you’re out," I pause for dramatic purposes, "She pulls you right back in."
He chuckles lightly, and I know I’ve got him back to a better mood. "This is true."
"I still don’t get why you went back to her." and I really don’t.
"I don’t know, Ash, I guess it’s just the fact that I can get back with her."
My brow furrows as I try to comprehend what he’s saying, "Explain yourself Dennison."
He turns in his bar stool so he’s facing me, "Well, other than Madison, there’s you and Spencer. You turned out to be gay." Hell, he’s right, can’t argue with that. "And Spencer’s a beautiful, amazing girl, but she’s more interested in you." Once again, he’s right. I have to admit, I’m pretty tough competition. "Madison’s the only one left that I’m relatively close to who isn’t interested in other girls." Touché, Aiden, touché. "I guess I just want something out of a relationship. Like when you and I were together, it wasn’t just physical. I want that. I want to know that I’m likeable for things other things than my body."
I nod, "You’re not gonna find that in Madison, Slick." Hey, it’s the truth.
"I know, but I’m tired of waiting, Ash."
"Look, Aiden, you’ll find that person. You just gotta keep your eyes open. Have your fun with Madison, if you want. Just be careful."
"When did you get so insightful?"
"Oh, please, I’m me. I’m just naturally amazing." I know, conceited. Sue me.
He rolls his eyes and engulfs me in a hug, "Thanks."
I pat him on the back, "Nothing to it."
As we pull apart my phone starts to ring, and I have a wrestling match with my pocket to free the phone from its tight clutches. I swear, people who make girl’s jeans don’t expect them to carry anything in their pockets. I finally manage to pull it out and don’t even bother looking at the caller ID before flipping open the phone and holding it to my ear. "Davies summer home, summer (some are) not…Hey, Spence…That was not a lame way to answer the phone!" I can hear Aiden laughing in the background. “What?…Oh, that’s Aiden…Yeah, he came to help me clean the kitchen…”
I see Aiden stand from his bar stool and go to leave through the back door, "Hold on one sec, Spencer." I walk over to Aiden and thank him for helping me clean. He nods and exits. He is one screwed up dude, that’s for sure. "Okay, back…What?…No way, really?…Well that’s good." This has been one crazy day for sure. I feel it’s only going to get more hectic with time. Hmm, whatever, I’ll strap in for the ride.
