Chapter 8
Dinner with Peggy and Helena had gone well. They sat around and talked mostly about Angelica but also about the center and Bette’s art. Everyone was still blown away with her artistic skills. She promised to show them her studio tomorrow.
When it got late, Tina suggested that they return to their room and get some rest. It had been a long day and she could tell that Bette was getting tired. They thanked Peggy once again for bringing them back together and made plans to meet for breakfast the next morning.
When Tina and Bette got back to their room, there was an awkward silence as they both wondered about the sleeping arrangements. Tina was the first to end the standoff “Bette are you comfortable sleeping with me tonight? We are not going to do anything that you are not comfortable with. But I really just want to sleep with you tonight…just hold you, please.”
She saw Bette relax and smile “yes, please. I would love to just hold you tonight. Thank you for being so understanding T.”
Tina smiled “you called me T. You always called me T. Have you remembered anything?”
Bette just smiled and said “no, it just felt natural.”
They got ready for bed. Tina pulled the covers back and Bette got in bed and opened her arms. Tina slid into them and placed her head on Bette’s shoulder. She sighed “I have missed you so much Bette. Just hold me tonight, please.”
Bette smiled and whispered “always T.”
Bette could hear Tina’s even breathing. She smiled and kissed her gently on the top of her head, then drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
Tina was jarred from her sleep by violent movements within the bed. It took her a moment to get her bearings and realize where she was. Beside her, Bette was thrashing violently. It was as if she was fighting for her life. Tina quickly yet carefully wrapped her arms around Bette and tried to soothe her. “Shhh, Bette it’s ok. You’re safe. I’ve got you baby. Bette everything is going to be ok. I’m right here. I’ve got you.”
Slowly Bette began to calm down and wake up. She was covered in sweat and her eyes were large with fear. She clung to Tina and began to cry. “Shhh, Bette it’s ok. No one is going to hurt you. You are safe baby. You just had a nightmare.”
