Where You Go There You Are

Bette sensing Angelica’s embarrassment leans forward and softly pats the fidgeting hands.  “Angelica we all play roles in life.  Learning when and when not to play these roles is also part of growing up.  It’s hard to be true to yourself.  Who we are isn’t always what falls into the nice and simple categories people always seem to want to tag us with.  What part of you do you not like?  Because as far as I can see you are a smart, terribly bright, quick witted young lady who is nothing short of wonderful to be around.”

Angelica normally would feel trapped at such a bold question, directly asked of her.  But for some reason with Bette, right here and now Angelica didn’t feel threatened.  Instead she opens her heart to this woman she barely knows, “I don’t like always being different.  Nothing I do changes anything.  People still talk about me behind my back.  I’ve tried to ignore them, that’s what my Mom has always today me to do.  It doesn’t work, it still hurts.”  Angelica declares spilling a little of the anguish that always stays with her.

Bette hears the words from Angelica but more than that she feels the pain.  It’s a pain she herself knows.  Bette’s distress is immediate when she thinks how the cruelty of others has had such a negative impact on Angelica.  Bette wants to reach across the table and pull her close and protect her.  But Bette knows there are some things everyone has to learn for themselves and this is one of those lessons.

Apparently the otherness that Tina had feared all those years ago was real.  It has put Angelica in a difficult position way too early in her life.  She has scars that Bette now sees clearly.

“Honey I know its never easy but sometimes people don’t understand how cruel they are being.”

To this Angelica was quick to respond.  “Oh they know!”  Angie has Paige’s face in her mind’s eye the night in the bar when Paige spilled all her venom.

“You are thinking of someone specific now … who your Mother?”

This gets Angelica to laugh, “No … not my Mom.  My Mom would freak if she knew what my friends say to me.  My Mom’s a little too …” here Angelica didn’t know how to describe her Mom to Bette.  She loves her Mom so much and if the truth be told was beginning to miss her a great deal.  The problem was if she called her she would have to explain all the lies.  For Angelica it was just too daunting a task.

“Too what?  Kind?  Generous?” Bette asks trying to fill in the blanks for Angelica.  “You’ve mentioned your Mother a few times.  Don’t you think that maybe she’s just a little panicked at not knowing where you are?”

Angelica tilts her head at this thought.  After a few seconds of thought, “No she thinks I’m somewhere else on Spring break.  She’s busy with work anyway.”  Angelica quickly dismisses the notion of her Mom being panicked.

Angelica can see Bette’s eyebrow raised in skepticism.  “Really its OK … for now anyway.  Next week when I don’t show up at home she’ll start to worry.  I was planning on calling her then.”

“So you love your Mother?” Bette asks but makes it more a statement.

Angelica nods her head not knowing how to describe her relationship with her Mom.  “We are all we have, each other.  Sometimes it becomes a bit much.  She worries a lot, so a long time ago I quit telling her about all the things going on with me.”

Angelica looks at Bette when she says this to see if she understands.  With the look of surprise on her face Angie quickly goes on to explain, “I know she loves me and all but she doesn’t get me.”

“You know Angelica you can’t control what others do.  You can only control who and what you are.  So far I get you love your Mother.  You love her so much you want to protect her from all the negative you have going on in your life, right?”

Angelica has to smile, she knew that Bette would get her.  “Yes that’s it.”

Bette goes on.  “OK so because you love her so much you put her to the side, sharing only what you think she’ll appreciate and hide or lie about the rest.”

    1. i haven’t left a comment on this story yet but i absolutely love it and i love more the frequency of your posts! i’m off to bed now and i’d really appreciate another one in the morning!! it’s getting so good now, though i do worry how angies gonna react when she knows bette told tina where she was, pps

    2. This is getting so interesting and could become explosive down the road. There is that otherness that Tina was so concerned with when the subject of Marcus came up. I am saddened that this story will be coming to an end, hopefully a happy one. I remeber when you first started you had mentioned that this was a story about Bette and Angelica and not so much one about Bette and Tina, but in one sense it is about Bette and Tina and this lovely teen who is as much like Bette as she is like Tina.

    3. Life WOULD be easier if we could control others, but a lot less interesting. So Tina needs to be honest with Angelica and Angelica needs to be honest with Tina. Most of all Tina needs to be honest with herself. Your not going to get sequestered, are you? Good luck!

    4. bette’s description of angie’s relationship with her mom is like describing herself when she was with tina. i hope that she will be able to make angie appreciate who she is and what she has. goodluck in court tomorrow!

    5. I love Bette, she is trying so hard to make Angie feel that she can talk to Bette,we know that she loves her mon. but was afraid to talk to her. Bette need more time with Angie. hope Tina sees this. good luck wecnesday. thanks

    6. i’m glad bette gets angelica and maybe she will help her to understand that protecting someone and leaving them out of your life is different…and i’m still hoping for happy ending :)

    7. This may be my first comment on this lovely story. Its a very good read and enjoyable. I completely understand and can relate to the characters. PPS

    8. I love the way you write Angie; you just want to put your arms around her and make it all better. And Bette is the gal who can do this. Please help Tina to understand this. Great story.

    9. I really hope that Angelicis will realy listen and understand what Bette is trying to tell her. Hopefully Tina will be able to tell Angie who Bette really is before they leave for NY or maybe not. Then again, that might just be too much for Angie to hear and understand. One thing that I hope Tina does is to haveher attorney in NY send the papers that she had drawn up when Angie was born, to Bette or to Tina showing that Bette is Angie’sother mother and that she wants her to have a part in Angie’s life. That would be so important to them at this point.Angie feels that love from Bette but she does not understand the feeling just yet or why she is feeling it. Tina must also admit to herself why he is so freaking happy at the moment, that it is all attributable to the one and only Bette Porter, the love of her life. Sure hope Tina changes her mind about taking them back to NY so soon, hopefully they could spend the rest of the week in LA, it would be so good for all of them. Hate to see this story end and maybe, just maybe if we are good boys and girls we can get you to do a sequel because this story just can’t end now, unless there is a very happy ending for all concerned. Angie needs to know just how much she is loved by people that have never seen her before because she is her mother’s child and they love her. I love this story so much. PPS

    10. OMG, its Bette Jr. She is so much like Bette keeping things from tina trying to protect her. I hope Bette will be able to get all of what Angie fears and worries about out of her. Then hopefully Tina will give Bette time to explain. They also need to be honest with Angie. They are also keeping stuff from her.

    11. I appreciate how you breathe life into all your characters. Angie connects deeply with Bette. I hope she doesn’t become too angry or bitter when she learns how she was deprived of growing up with Bette in her life.

    12. Good luck tomorrow (today because of the huge time difference). I hope the results will be to your liking. Angelica meet Bette – this is you 20 years from now. Thanks for showing why Angie wasn’t “thinking” about her mom; but she destroyed her cell; so she wouldn’t know that her mom might be trying to call her….I’m on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what you planned for these wonderful characters. Mmmmm, with everyone going to Bette’s in the morning…reunion time? Again, thanks for the story. And good luck…keeping all my fingers and toes cross for you!

    13. Hello JWet, AM just caught up in the last three chapter. These have been so enjoyable. Firstly, Bette and Angelica are just wonderful together. Bette is being a great friend and adult to Angelica. She is hitting all of the right notes to get Angie to open up to her. They do share their biracial heritage and so Bette can honestly sympathize with Angelica. The world can be so cruel and Angie’s is feeling the full force of this brutality. I do hope that Bette helps her through this tough time. It was awesome to imagine hw Angie’s face lit up when she was talking about her feelings for the painting and then when she opened up about her Mom. There is real love there. Great to see how Angie’s youthful side came out as she discuss her deception and mother’s ignorance of this event. Lordy knows how she will feel when the truth is revealed. Bette was deliberate in checking with Shane and checking out the best way to handling this difficult conversation. I feel Bette is on the right lines. Even though all she wants to do is surround Angie with her arms and love providing a blanket from the harsh reality, Bette is holding back and letting Angelica lead the dialogue. Gentle suggestions are helping Angelica down the right path. Oh how Bette has changed and grown. I do hope Tina sees this too and stays long enough to experience the new and much improved Bette. Conflict is in the air and now compassion and comfort are needed. Bette and Tina’s connection is palpable. Can’t wait to see Angie’s reaction when she discovers who broke Bette’s heart. Brilliant and loving. There is so much honesty and truthfulness. Please continue soon.As always JWet, these are fleshed out 3-dimensional individuals within past history and deliberate character traits. They live and breathe in this tale and carry along the readers with every word and phrase. Just perfect!!Thank you so much for sharing and caring enough. Your Most Loyal Fan and Dear Friend/ PS – Glad you had a magnificent Thanksgiving. Friends and family are what it is all about.
