    View from aTangent…Chapter 41

By the time Bette pulled into the parking lot of the hotel the rest of them were asleep. Alice was conked out, Shane disappeared in her hoodie and Tina snuggled against her pillow. Bette woke her first. Kissing her on each eyelid, then on her cheeks, then.Ts eyes fluttered open..smiling Bette kissed her again. The hotel was made of wood; in fact it looked like a big huge log cabin. Some taxidermist went crazy and animal heads were displayed high all over the front entrance. The style was obviously old-school with a tinge of red-neck. Alice noted this as they lugged baggage into the lobby. Bette took charge and talked to the head hotel clerk. She was too tired to note the look on the clerks face, a slight upturning of the nose which signaled repressed disgust. Alice, Shane, and Tina disappeared with the hotel keys while Bette did the paperwork. She was awake enough to notice the old couple in the corner of the lobby; they were staring at her like she was some kind of alien. This was an isolated community Bette thought, and didnt look away until the geezers looked at the floor then each other. Curtly thanking the clerk Bette went up the stairs. Bear heads scattered the wall and one lunging cougar was placed on a shelf above the stair, giving the impression it was attacking the person coming up. Bette felt like she was walking through someones weird fantasy. It didnt take long to find their room, the noise led her there. Alice was fully awake now and yapping on about ordering pizza when Bette walked in. Shane had her stuff in a corner and was in the bathroom with the door closed. Bette was worried about her because she had been very quiet so far; even for Shane she was quiet. Alice told Tina was looking around somewhere, and then turned back to the T.V trying to find the ***** channel. Bette lefteven though she forgave Alice for making fun of her Bette blamed her for the death of that unfortunate coyote. So Bette wandered down the hall, trying not to look at the menacing animal heads scattered on the hallway walls.

Bette found Tina in the dining area which was serving a late-night snack for the hotel night hawks. Kissing Tina she offered to buy them both a drink before turning in. Tina nodded and went back to studying a hotel book full of photos customers left in their room. Bette went up to the bar; all different kinds of alcohol decorated the shelves. Corona, Jack whiskey, Brandy etcBette ordered two screwdrivers. However the bartender just looked at her, he had a pock-marked face with a couple of chins. They pressed against his chest which was clothed in a red flannel shirt rolled up his arms which had black tattoos of drunken men and playboy women all over them. Bette looked at him. He finally made her drinks and turned his back to washing the cups. Bette paid and went over to Ts table. She felt weird here; it was like the entire hotel exuded some kind of hostility to them. The bartender looked like he was going to pull out a gun and Bette for a second was afraid. She sat down and pushed the drink over to Tina. Both were silent. Bette drank her screwdriver quickly hurrying Tina to do the same. Tina asked Bette what they should do tomorrow, they should do something fun besides just driving. They would figure it out tomorrow Bette said, she got up and pulled Tina with her. As they made their way to the rooms Bette whispered that the place made her feel weird. Tina whispered back that it made her feel like she was the deer in some rabid republicans headlights. Finally they got back to their room. Shane was reading a book in bed with Alice flaked out beside. Bette and Tina went into the bathroom to brush their teeth and get ready for bed, but T had a different idea.
