    Valediction (One/Three)

It blew me away that I had ceased to be scared. I should have been; rationally speaking, I should have been absolutely terrified. I wasn’t, not in the least. I was happy and peaceful and I felt free. It’s the strangest thing in the world…one of the true blessings for the dying. When you know it’s happening, you let all the meaningless shit go. Well, I did, anyway. I don’t know if everybody’s that lucky. I hope they are, though. I felt liberated.

She was standing just inside the door when I got home, looking at the picture of the bare tree in the snow that she’s had on the wall for years. I always tease her about it, since everything else in the apartment is pretty warm and upbeat, and that picture definitely isn’t. It didn’t matter, though. She hugged me like she’d never let go, telling me over and over again how sorry she was and how much she loved me. I said the same in return, and tried to explain how I was feeling. I was sure she’d call the psych ward, but to her everlasting credit, she understood my weirdly timed happiness. I could see it in her eyes.

"I understand why you don’t want to do it, Dana. I was being selfish; it’s your decision and if you want to have a few good months with me before you leave, I’ll be right here. I want you to be happy, okay? That’s all I want," she confessed brokenly.

I spent the next half hour talking through it with her, telling her about what I’d concluded at church. She tried to talk me out of it, saying that it was her selfishness that had made me think that way and that’s not how I should go about it, but I was ready and willing to give it a shot.

"Promise me that if we find out it’s not doing any good, you’ll stop so we can have a few months to ourselves, to just be happy? Without all the drugs?"

I knew what she was driving at; it was as close to a compromise as we could come in that situation. I loved her for it, and for everything. I leaned in and kissed her like I had the very first time, and when I managed to pull away a few minutes later, all I said was, "Okay."

    1. I hate to just repeat what everyone else said…but yeah, wow. I don’t think I’ve ever cried from fan fic before, but tears actually welled up in my eyes by the 3rd page of this. I almost didn’t read it because I want to live in a delusional fan fic universe where Dana dying of cancer is never part of the equation, but I love your writing so much I couldn’t resist. I’m bracing myself for the outcome, but I know it’ll be worth it if the next 2 chapters are anything like this one (and I’m sure they will be).

    2. Wow…that’s pretty much all there is to say. I’m supposed to be writing a paper, but i stopped to see if anything new was posted and i’m glad i did! This is such an awesome story, its so real. Please continue and SOON!

    3. Dana’s death really was handled poorly on the show, both last season and this one (so far), so I’m interested to see your interpretation. This was an excellent first chapter, though I know the heartbreak is coming. Thanks

    4. you got me all so teary eyes :'( liking the closure that we certainly didn’t get on the show. also the first person-thing. it’s done perfect :)

    5. I lost my longest friend recently to cancer so this opened those wounds. It is a poingnant story and well constructed and written so the reader is a participant. Please continueJackie E

    6. Ok, I just have to say that I pretty much started crying on the second page, and now that I’m finished I still can’t stop crying. That was…my God. There are no words for all the love and emotion you just created between the two. 5 pages of your story proved their love more than storyline IC could have written. Please post the rest of this story soon, although I’ll have to remember to grab an entire box of tissues next installment. Great job.

    7. Amazing! I love how you are writing this…I like the 1st person angle, it works! I am almost crying, but I am at work and that makes me want to cry on its own…no seriously you have a gift! Looking fwd to all your posts for all your stories (YOU, Weather the Storm and now Valediction)
