Under a Half Pink Moon (Time of Day 10)

This kiss got a response. She felt Kate’s hands upon her shoulder, the other woman drawing herself closer, beginning to get into the rhythm of the kiss.

Wine and cigarettes. She’d tasted the combination in the past, especially during times when Bette got busy, got stressed. But that was Bette. This was not quite the same.

Something related to the experience, though. Some softness. Some possible intimacy.

The initial trepidation that Kate had displayed was changing. The aggression that the other woman often voiced was beginning to come to the fore. Tina felt a hand tugging at her shirt where it was tucked in.

Kate’s hand moved around inside the waistband at one side, freeing it from front to back. As her tongue dug in deeper, the hand worked its way upwards, back of the fingers grazing the silky bra on the underside of Tina’s breast.

The sensation made Tina’s breath catch. Not wanting to discourage Kate, she imitated a new kiss. If she closed her eyes and imagined, this could almost be what she wanted, who she wanted.

She hadn’t really noticed that the hand had been withdrawn. “You’re not really with me, here.”

The words drew Tina from her reverie. “What?” She ran her fingers under Kate’s scarf. “I’m here.”

“You are,” Kate shook her head, “but not with me, not really.”

When Tina again opened her mouth to protest, Kate put her fingers over her lips. “I’ll see you at the studio.”

With that, Kate wandered up the beach.

Tina moved closer to the house, but still out by the water, and sat down. She watched the thin light catch on the water, listened to the waves.

Someone approached, but Tina didn’t look up. It could have been Kate, but she knew it wouldn’t be.

Shane held a Corona in front of Tina’s face. “Need one?”

“Yes.” Tina then regretted that the response might have been a little too forceful, but she carefully took the bottle from her friend’s hand. “Where’s Paige?”

“She’s kind of crashed. I thought I’d let her nap a little.”

“Kind of you, considering it is 2 a.m.”

“Night’s young,” Shane shrugged. She took a seat directly behind Tina, laying her chin on Tina’s shoulder. “How about you?”

    “Me?”

    “I, uh, saw Kate leaving.”

“Yeah.” Tina took a swig from the bottle. “Me.”

    “I’m sorry.”

“I know.” Tina lightly patted her friend’s hand. “I tried. Everyone told me I should try. Bette told me. It just wasn’t…”

“Wasn’t her?” Shane didn’t need to repeat the name to understand what was going on with her friend.

Tina’s lips tightened and she shook her head.

    “And she’s in New York.”

“She called me for help tonight.”

    “What’d you tell her?”

Tina let out a laugh. “I told her to tell Jodi the words that I’ve wanted to say to her.”

To that, Tina felt a kiss on her cheek. “She doesn’t see how hard this is for you.”

    “Does everyone know?”

“Your close friends, I think so, all except…”

“All except Bette.” Tina took another drink. “God, I must look like a fool, hanging around, waiting for crumbs.”

“You’re in love, Tina.” Shane gave a squeeze. “I think maybe I finally know how that feels.”

“I’m glad for you, Shane. I really am.”

    “Thanks.”

Together they sat, until the beer ran out, and then joined the others at the fire. Oddly enough, Tina found herself sitting next to Helena who seemed happier, more confident than she’d been in a long time.

“C’mon,” Helena nudged her just as the first light was gracing the eastern sky. “Let’s go get some breakies.”

“I have to get Angelica, she’s at the babysitter’s.”

“We’ll get her on the way.”

As they were leaving, Tina noticed especially the couples around the fire.

Paige and Shane were cuddled together.

Further away from the group, Tasha held Alice. Soon Tasha would be gone. ‘I know how you feel, Alice,’ Tina thought.

In some ways, it was easier for Alice that the woman she loved would be far away. Tina knew Bette would soon be returning. With Angelica, they’d be seeing each other often. Would Jodi return, also? Then what?

    1. part II… just wondering…how do do think Bette’s love and devotion to Angelica and Jodi’s aversion to kids will play out… in this Tina clearly wins….

    2. Special thanks to all who are commenting today. I’m feeling a bit battered by circumstance today, and knowing you’re reading helps make things better.

    3. Pseud, if I’d known I would have commented yesterday. I always look for any story of yours and regard each one as a “how to” of exceptional writing.

    4. Maybe just maybe Jodie will decide to stay in New York and Bette will return to LA. I do understand Tina reluctance to voice her love for Bette. Even if everyone else sees it and Bette does not Tina is doing the right thing in letting Bette come back to her on her own terms.

    5. Well, poop. If I had known yesterday wasn’t so great, pseud, I’d have read this and commented then rather than now. I hope things are better now. And Bette is definitely blind. I keep expecting Shina to happen here though. LOL Meh if Bette wants to go singing’ in the fields of NY with Jodi then let Tina have some fun.

    6. Pseud, That was torture. On one hand in was pleasing to see Tina take the initiative and move towards Kate however it wasn’t who her heart wanted. This vibe is what Kate picked up on and so left. Shane was a true friend; ready to offer support and comfort while realizing the cause. More please as this is becoming a must read series. Many thanks for sharing your talented words with me. Your Loyal Fan.

    7. Pseud,I’m really enjoying your stories–always have. I have a real problem with the Kate character and cannot even imagine Tina being attracted to someone with so little class. IC could have made much better use of Sciorra–she’s a wonderful actress being asked to play a role not in keeping with her talents. I look forward to more of your writing!Lin

    8. Maybe Shane could have a friendly chat with Bette when she gets back to discuss A. how shitty Jodi has been to her, and B. how Tina’s still in love with her.

    9. Tina will get more than crumbs. I just can’t see, or rather, refuse to see, Bette and Jodi lasting any length of time. Great post as always, pseud. Thanks
