The Very Thought of You, Chapter 17

We walked into a dark, artsy café.  Jazz music throbbed from crackly speakers that hung near the ceiling in the corners.  Small tables crowded the small space and pictures and bits of news articles adorned the walls.  The clientele was varied, some business people, some teens, and mostly artists.  Needless to say, if I hadn’t been completely distracted by the woman I happened to be with, I may have felt out of place.  I told her what I wanted as she directed me to a table near the window where she could people watch, a leftover favorite pastime of hers.  Pieces of all the attributes I loved most about her surfaced as we continued to spend time together.  She could charm even the most obstinately ornery of people.  She quickly wooed the clerk at the coffee shop into easy conversation, laughing and talking with him as if they were old friends, a mood that benefited the other customers long after she walked away.

When she returned, she sat, immediately comfortable in her surroundings, emanating the feeling that she owned the place.  We slipped into easy conversation, mostly small talk to start off, slowly evolving into things slightly more significant.  She had certainly only gotten more attractive with age.  Where she had been a beautiful, white bread, girl-next-door before, she was now a gorgeous, dressed-for-success, city woman, finally possessing the years that matched her maturity.  She reached to tuck a stray piece of hair behind her ear, mimicking the gesture she enacted when we first met.

You know that feeling when you’re so hungry that you’re nauseous, and you finally eat, but you still feel hungry until the food catches up with your stomach?  That sated but not satisfied feeling?  That’s how it felt being with her again.  It was as if I hadn’t eaten and at the end of a very long day, I was finally given an expansive meal… only it wasn’t enough.  Being with her wasn’t enough.  I wanted more, wanted her to envelop me and make the hungering go away.  I needed more of her.

She switched topics, engaging me in discourse about my trip.  I frantically clung to my refusal to discuss anything before today, opting to tell her what I’d seen and done on my own.  She listened intently, her eyes lighting up when she recognized a place she knew and loved.  Her eyes.  Right now, they were a warm brown, matching the steaming liquid that resided in the mugs in front of us.  The city had even conquered her eyes as they, at least for now, no longer held the dark hue of damp farm soil her Wisconsin self’s eyes had possessed.  I eventually noticed the café had emptied slightly and looked around to find a clock.  When I did, I smiled, turning back to her and trying not to give away my disappointment.

    1. Oh gosh, can hardly wait for tomorrow to see how Tina ends up dressing and where Bette takes her and what they end up doing for the rest of the evening. Gosh, hope Bette is not with anyone and that Tina comes to her senses and leaves Henry in the dust.

    2. yes!!! NY, I just read your 2 last chapters and you left me WOW… yes, wow, I was like ‘no way!!!!!!!’ Yes, imagine a 20 yesarsd old girl on the verge of making a happy dance in a lanhouse(is that how they are called? my girl calls them like that, but I never know…) AAAAAAAAAAANYWAY… PLEASE!!!! I’ll kneel down if I have to, please post soon!!!

    3. So thirty years later and Tina’s ready to make a move? Yeah right!!! BTW NY, unless there is a new meaning for the term “white bread” I’m surprised you used it. It such a racist and derogatory word.

    4. “You never know how slow the moments go till I’m near to you I see your face in every flower Your eyes in stars above Its just the thought of youthe very thought of you my love” I love it NY! You know I really hope Tina has guts to grab what she wants and run like hell! Post Soon!

    5. Right, after decades of living a life of secondary happiness in suburbia, Tina seems to be taking a leap. She’s dressing to impress and trying to leave her dissatisfied haus-frau persona behind. I hope she can, this time, for her own sake as well as for Bette’s. I actually see light at the end of the tunnel… Another great chapter… and by the way, NY, please don’t ever refer to your story as “little scribblings”… your writing is so much greater than that. I think it’s fabulous, so don’t belittle it. Thanks for the chapter.

    6. Sensible shoes. So gay. xD Wow so Tina isn’t just going somewhere with Bette. She’s going OUT with Bette. Uh huh, Tina, you better go because it’s your freakin’ birthday! And I just realized how lame that sounded. I give up. *dies*

    7. NY, I am glad that I could give you a laugh by yelling at your Tina. So here it goes again….Tina if you let Bette go again I will somehow get into this story and personally slap you silly. Some people don’t get a first chance with there soulmate let alone a second. Please NY I beg of you please don’t let Tina be stupid twice with the same love of her life. I hope the “surprise” snow storm clears up very soon. You really need to get some sleep my friend. Talk soon!

    8. Hey NY! Still following this wonderfully written story. So they finally find each other again! YAY! Now we will get to see what the beautiful Bette Porter has been up to all these years. I sure hope Tina is tired of playing it ‘safe’ and ready to follow her heart. It’s never too late to find your happiness, right? Go out there and get it girls!

    9. You know, i so get what you wrote about Tina knowing Bette was still hers from that little gesture- the hand on the small of her back. I had that sorta moment too once and thought i was being silly to read too much into it, so i was really surprised when you described the very same gesture! anyway, about the chapter- i like how you infused a bit of humour towards the end. No bitter after-taste! yey! Loved this, NY, looking forward to more. Oh and babe? totally hear ya about the Valentine thing :D

    10. Trust me when I tell you, it is a joy to be here. Tina is ready to take charge (maybe) – could it be Alpha Tina? Could it? LOL…You know I love Alpha Tina…. and that personae sure would be a change for her in this story. I can’t wait to find out if this is what they’ve been waiting 30 years for. You write with such grace and elegance, NY… thank you.

    11. “Finally, she gently placed her hand on the small of my back, guiding me into a storefront. That one gesture told me all I needed to know, that she was still mine. That we still belonged to each other.”… Priceless! NYGL, this story is like nothing we ever had!… A lifetime story! The feelings and emotions you’re putting out there are exceptionnal!… Most of those feelings I’m sure most of us can identify with… Can’t wait to see where you’re taking them! Thanks a lot!

    12. Noo Yawk…Where have you’ve been hiding? I am so glad that you decided to write b/c you definitely have a talent. Your writing stands up to the best of them. And that can be proven by the best of them commenting on your story. PPS. So you like Jodi?

    13. I’ve been a silent reader…mostly because I just happen to stimble upon the story and I’ve been reading them back-to-back to catch up. Now that I am it’s darned hard to have to wait 24hrs for a new one BUT, you’re worth it! :) I love your wit and writing style…hope you stick around for a while…you’re now one of my fave authors…and that list is VERY short

    14. Another amazing job babe. Every time I click on a chapter, I prepare myself to be swept away…I loved that they were walking down the street together to get to the cafe and the little touches/brushing against each other…sooooromantic and I savoured the hug at the end just as much as they did I think! This was beautiful! I’m beginning to sound like a broken record aren’t i? :) And now moving on to the next!
